The Urge to Embellish presents an eclectic array of new acquisitions and rarely-seen works from the Illinois State Museum Collection, many of which were made by non-professional artists. The objects reveal how embellishment has been guided by experimentation, learned behavior, social expectations, and traditions. Included are commemorative, ceremonial, decorative, functional, and whimsical objects spanning two centuries. Many date from the mid- to late-nineteenth century when the idiom of effusive ornamentation reached its zenith and pervaded the visual aesthetics of material culture. The exhibition is comprised of 2- and 3- dimensional pieces constructed with beads, ceramics, feathers, fibers, hair, metal, paint, papier-mâché, porcupine quills, wood, and other materials.

Free to the public. Tours are available.

Be amazed by our exhibit of new work by artist Immy Mellin, known to fans as the Sharpie King. His nickname is the result of his use of brightly-colored Sharpie markers to create large scale drawings that can be described as graphic, geometric, complex, abstract, and surreal. A native of Acapulco, Mexico, Immy Mellin now lives in Pilsen. This exhibit is in conjunction with the Chicago Public Library’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and Chicago Artists Month. There will be a bilingual Artist’s Talk on Saturday, October 17, at 2pm in the Art Reference Room on the 8th floor of the Harold Washington Library Center.

Two years before he began work on the “Plan of Chicago,” Daniel Burnham drew plans to modernize Manila, the capitol of the Philippine Islands, and Baguio, a nearby small city. The photography exhibition, “Daniel Burnham’s Enduring Vision for the Philippines,” documents the powerful presence the buildings and parks built to Burnham’s plan still have in the often-chaotic landscapes of these two cities. Tim Long, a Chicago landscape and architectural photographer, worked on this project from 2006 to 2008 with assistance from a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

As part of the Chicago Artist’s Month, Barbara Wakefield will re-introduce Ann Guilford; an alter ego or persona developed by the artist in the winter of 2009. With every series, Ann Guilford creates objects and installations instigating an ongoing dialogue with her audience on her own Twitter and Facebook pages.

Ann Guilford’s “Handkerchief Series” is a collection of personal “hankies” that Barbara Wakefield gathers from friends and family members as part of an interactive project. Wakefield will embroider each handkerchief to capture Ann Guilford’s reactions to stories shared with participants. Barbara Hashimoto’s multi-disciplinary visual and performance-based project, The Junk Mail Experiment, will be presented in two concurrent exhibitions - at the Musée du Montparnasse (Paris) and at Dubhe Carreño Gallery (Chicago).

The genesis of The Junk Mail Experiment is founded in the artist’s year-long collection and hand-shredding of every piece of junk mail that came to her studio address. At the end of twelve months she had amassed more than 3,000 cubic feet of shredded material. Hashimoto’s labor-intensive yet intimate process has inspired a series of sculptures, installations, performances, and collaborations.

Dubhe Carreño Gallery will exhibit work from this on-going environmental art project and present a live-video feed direct from the museum in Paris during the building of the installation and opening events. Upon her return to Chicago, Hashimoto will discuss her collaborative experiences in Paris and present a short-cut from Suzanne Körois’ film of the project in an Artist’s Talk at the gallery.

Founded in 1975, Lillstreet Art Center is a large community of artists and students working side-by-side in a friendly environment which encourages and inspires artistic growth in the individual. Lillstreet Art Center supports the arts through an artist residency program, gallery, studio space, education, and an outreach program.

In 2003, we relocated from a converted horse barn on Lillstreet to a former gear factory on Ravenswood. “Memorabilia” Recent works by Makeba Kedem-DuBose

Makeba Kedem-DuBose grew up in what she likes to refer to asa female tribe, in a public housing project on the near West Side of Chicago.She is a product of the Catholic Church and school system and, under thedirection of a Jesuit priest, Father James Hasse, himself an artist, shedeveloped her passion for painting. He taught her the basics of art, arthistory and various techniques. Makeba’s painting style reflects the mentor’sinfluence, African based ancestral practices from her maternal Grandmother andthe Judeo-Mystic practices of spirituality from her Father.

Her work speaks to viewers on a spiritual level. Makeba’smission is to pull viewers in, and move the reference point from which they seethe world outside of themselves, thus enabling them to recognize themselveswithin her vision of family and oneness. She views her art as a tool to assistin connecting the human race for the ultimate purpose of peace.

The Visual Arts Gallery at Governors State University will host an exhibition of the work of Chicago artist, Gabriel Villa. The exhibit will remain open to the public from September 30 through October 23 with an artist's reception a on Wednesday, October 14th from 6:00-9:00p.m.

"Like alchemists, academics, graffiti artists, poets, rebels and paratroopers aflame, the art of Gabriel Villa is anything but a stationary traveler; like Ulysses under the double concaveness of a lake and the sky, his gaze is the site of visions: The most beautiful and loneliest woman, the inverse area of the umbra that rises inversely and proportional to the greatness of the city, the modern Metropolis like a Leviathan...Knowing how to carefully place everything, it all fits in a gaze: The light of a candle, a neon light, dust and snow, chalk and ashes; los inabarcable filos de la vida,great heights and the great cavities of the earth: This is what makes the work of Gabriel Villa a search where a discovery is what the classic teachers understood it to be: Thousands of mixtures and hard work fail to transfigure the immutable nature of matter: The Transfiguration, the only true change into another state occurs in the innermost part of nature, the mass of the shadows, titillating lights, a variable fogginess that lives in the heart of the Alchemist." - excerpted from "Gaze as Hunger: The Art of Gabriel Villa" by Alejandro Perez Cervantes

Gabriel Villa received his BFA from the Corpus Christi State University in 1992 and his MFA from the University of Delaware three years later. Since 2005, he has served as an educator at Chicago's National Museum of Mexican Art as well as co-curating exhibitions at that institution's Kraft Foods Gallery.

Mask making fascinates me. I use plaster and cheese cloth to make the molds of my masks. Then, I draw the designs and paint them with acrylics. I apply gloss over the acrylics. The size of my masks is that of the human face. My masks are characters; the face patterns and colors express their emotions. Mask making is such a long historical tradition across so many cultures. Ancient Greek theater masks of the smiling/laughing and the crying faces (comedy/tragedy), voodoo masks, Mexican masks -beloved kachinas/la magia de la sonrisa y de juego, African masks, Commedia Dell’ Arte masks, Chinese theater masks and so many others celebrate humans in all their complexity, celestial beings, fertility, mythology, nature. It is visual theater! It is about life!

Upon meeting one of Chicago's most prolific up-and-coming artists, Immy Mellin, one cannot help but be overcome by a sense of strength and certainty in his ability to speak what one might call the "universal language", communicating the chaordic and spiritual evolution of man within the universe. Beyond his talent to feel and beckon feeling, Immy's medium stands as its own force within his work - the artist produces large-scale pieces done entirely in Sharpie Marker. Immy's art negotiates the socially-drawn line between fine art and contemporary urban graffiti, simultaneously transcending of the illusions of age, race, culture, and demographic. Whether a single, specific message is consciously relayed to the viewer through Immy's hand, or rather manifests itself as a collective force upon one's subconscious, one would be hard-pressed to turn away from the artist's work without understanding a bit more about oneself and his or her place in the galactic order and disorder of being.

Featured Chicago Artists:

Paul Branton - Choosing visual art as his main focus, Branton entered Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, majoring in Commercial Art with a strong emphasis in painting. It was at Millikin where he also discovered a love for poetry and strong desire for painting, eventually putting on a one man art exhibit displaying his works. The art of Paul Branton has been exhibited throughout Illinois, including Millikin University, University of Illinois in Chicago and South Side Community Art Center. His work hangs in the homes of private owners from New York to Los Angeles.
Jennifer Bridgeforth - A self-taught painter, Jennifer uses life experience as the basis of her abstract work. “I use painting as an outward expression of my inner voice. For me, the stroke of a brush can be as powerful as a tantrum and as peaceful as a meaningful whisper. The end result makes me feel as though I am being heard on a level that my words alone may not express.” This emerging artist received her B.A. from Bradley University, and her work is currently displayed in private collections in Chicago, Pennsylvania and New York.
Quentin Crockett - 26- year-old award winning artists, Quentin Crockett, is truly talented beyond his means. Crockett, whom is a native of Monster, IN, but was raised in Chicago, IL engaged in developing great art since the early age of six. Following the military he attended South Suburban College for drawing and painting classes. It was there that Crockett received two purchase awards, and one nominee for a purchase award. Crockett was also featured in South Suburban's 2006-2007 25th volume Scriblerian magazine. In 2008, Crockett's art was donated to a gala benefit auction hosted by "Community Economic Development Association of Cook County. The organization that hosted the event, donated the funds from the purchase of his art work to low income families in Cook County.
Tia Etu - A graduate of Chicago's School of the Art Institute, Tia Jones has been an Artist/Teacher in Chicago and Oak Park since 1982. She has studied art in Paris, France, and served for a time as an Ambassador of the Arts in Brazil. Her lifelong endeavor has been to improve the quality of the human behavior and experience through her art. Tia's product resounds. It captures social inequities in powerful and unique ways. Her life experiences and travels have sat her at the table of many cultures, be it across the sea or across the border lines of Chicago - giving her first hand knowledge of what it’s like to be "the other." The pathos depicted in these pieces reaches across all borders of race, gender orientation, and religion, and grabs the viewer with a very real sense of human longing for acceptance.
Philippe Gibson - Philippe Gibson was born into a family of artists in Oyster Bay, Long Island and started drawing at the age of two. He studied fashion illustration, graphic design, and art therapy at the School Of Visual Arts and The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. As a fashion illustrator, Gibson’s first commission was with J.C. Penny’s corporate office in Dallas, Texas, creating in-house fashion designs. As a Painter, Gibson has worked as a muralist, set designer, and with interior designers. Since 1997 Gibson has invested time teaching and mentoring aspiring young artists with St. Anthony’s School and Mahogany Dance Theatre in Dallas, Texas. He has also supported various community and charitable causes in Chicago, New York City, and Dallas.
Christopher Jarred - “My work is about a balance between structure and chaos, much like my life. The compositions that attain this balance are those that come from a frantic emotional state, in which colors and feelings push themselves outward, quickly, yet are tamed by the structure and organization of a pattern, texture or color. The Art became my new magic. It allowed me to document my path of acceptance, understanding and became that closure I needed with dealing with my mother’s death. My Art is infused with Truth & Illusion, Pain & Pleasure, Spirit & Hope."
Nicole Malcolm - Nicole Malcolm received her BA in fine art at Chicago State University in spring of 2006. Malcolm has participated in various shows such as the Chicago State University Art Exhibition 2006, “Black Creativity” at the Museum of Science and Industry 2006/2007, the premier exhibit “Art Mentors in Our Community” at Neleh’s Artistic Expression 2006, and solo exhibition “Seen and Unseen” at UIC fall 2007. Many of her pieces have also been featured in an independent film “Family Values” in 2007(which has won first place at the Black Harvest Film Festival. in 2008, her work was shown at the “Black Fine Art Show” in Manhattan, New York and “Boule’ Art Show” at Albany Historical art museum in Albany, New York.
Asten Mosley - Asten Mosley took his first class at Chicago's historic South Side Community Art Center at the tender age of 12 years old. This is when he first tapped into his artistic talents. Since then he has exhibited in various juried shows and exhibits including ones organized by the Beverly Arts Institute, NAACP and Morraine Valley Community College. He has been represented by Gallery Guichard since early 2008.
Kudzai B. Mutasa - Kudzai B. Mutasa was born in Zimbabwe, Africa and came to United States with her mother in 1987. Ms. Mutasa currently resides in Chicago, Illinois where she graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. Along with being an artist she is also an Associate Brand Manager for a well known consumer product and very active in her community. Her work has been shown at the National Black Fine Arts Show in New York, the State Farm Agents Training Seminar in San Francisco and most recently at the National Urban League Conference in Chicago.
Max Sansing - Sansing’s work has been displayed at art galleries and special events in Chicago and in New York. "My works deal mostly with form and aesthetic Stemming from my graphic design, and graffiti art background. Also, I have a deep appreciation for the American Imagist Artists [such as] Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell, Gustav Klimt, Thomas Blackshear, and Ellis Sansing (Father). My background and influences help me create unique visual concepts for my works."
Naequel Scott - She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art History and an Associate of Science Degree in Graphic Design. In addition to studying art she also enjoys teaching art. For the past eight years she has taught fine art at Misericordia Center, a home for individuals with special needs. It is there she shares her creativity and passion for art with others.
Although she has completed several commissioned works and participated in other group shows, Naequel looks especially forward to being a part of Gallery Guichard’s “Emerged” Exhibition. It is here she hopes to make her debut as one of Chicago’s up and coming artists.
Darryl Westly - "Hailing from the south side of Chicago 15 minutes outside of the loop, I am the complete and utter definition of a “city kid”, and such is directly reflected in my art, which consist of a mix of influences as ecliptic and diverse as our city’s history. I now reside in Brooklyn New York where I attend Pratt Institute of Art as a full time fine art major in sculpture. Above all I value fluidity, the organic all clarity in my work, which change as I grow older and more experienced."

Join co-curator Charles Esche and exhibiting artists Sarah Kanouse, Kerry James Marshall, and Marjetica Portc for a debate about the benefits and limits of thinking about contemporary art in relation to geographic regions.

Mix and mingle with artists from around the region and enjoy an in-gallery performance by Jeremiah Day and a special appearence by Whoop Dee Doo!

The works of Chicago ARTillery founding members are rooted in civic involvement, leadership, education and the democratic process. The works are made either in a collective consensus process or the works represent the values of democracy: To grant options and alternatives through participation. Chicago ARTillery works are less about aesthetics and more about transformation and options, very much like activists' efforts to transform communities.
