Organized by the Alliance of Artists Communities and hosted by Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, the American Creativity At Risk symposium explored the nature of human creativity and its significance in a wide range of disciplines, taking artists' communities as a model and a metaphor for fostering pure research and innovation in all sectors of society and culture. The symposium resulted in a call to action addressing the challenges and opportunities of restoring creativity as a priority in public policy, cultural philanthropy, and education. Symposium speakers and panelists included Robert MacNeil, Lewis Hyde, Brendan Gill, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Mary Schmidt Campbell, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Ellen Winner, David Liddle, Mary Catherine Bateson, Ned Hall, and Stewart Brand, among others. The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) is a 100-year-old non-profit organization that serves the informational, educational and professional needs of the international ceramics community.
