BACKGROUND:
More than 40 years have passed since the Artists’ Protest Committee issued a call to action protesting the Vietnam War. They exclaimed, “The horror that is the undeclared war in Vietnam is becoming more intense every day. Simultaneously, significant groups of people throughout the country are voicing their indignation, and demand an end to this senseless war.” The resulting response was to create the Artists’ Tower against the War in Vietnam also known as the Peace Tower.
Designed by Mark di Suvero, the Peace Tower was built in February 1966 at the intersection of La Cienega and Sunset Boulevards in Los Angeles. Nearly 400 artists including, Judy Chicago, Leon Golub, Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell contributed panels that were exhibited around the tower, symbolizing protest.
In 2006, in response to the war in Iraq, Mark di Suvero and Rirkrit Tiravanija created a new tower for the Whitney Biennial exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Over 150 artists including Louise Bourgeois, Matthew Barney and Yoko Ono donated panels about peace and protest for display on the Peace Tower.
Mark di Suvero and Rirkrit Tiravanija hoped this new Peace Tower would be an inspiration for other peace towers around the world. In this spirit, Mark di Suvero is creating a Peace Tower project for the people and city of Chicago in the Chicago Cultural Center.
