The Negative Space is a community darkroom located in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood. The space exists through support of local photographers continuing the practice of analog photography. Members pay a monthly or hourly rate to use the facilities and keep the darkroom going. The mission of the community darkroom is to support the dieing art of analog photography and create an environment where artists can not only use the equipment and chemicals but also express themselves without boundaries or censorship.
The darkrooms goal is to have a community of people continuing to make photographs the old fashion way, and to utilize the darkroom equipment. We are aware of the disappearance and inaccessibly of other darkroom facilities in Chicago, and emphasize accessibility to the space by providing 24-hour access. We also acknoledge the demand for photographers with home darkrooms and their need to make printing easier, cheaper, and faster. This is why we provide discounts on memberships for people who want to donate or loan their old equipment and chemicals. The Negative Space is encouraging more photographers to become members and utilize this opportunity to create black and white photography in the darkroom.
