GIFTED”: 12 ARTISTS DISTRIBUTESUSTAINABLE ART

 

 

Chicago,IL – December 11, 2009 –  Twelve Chicago artistsexplore the concept of a gift economy in “gifted,” an exhibition of freedistribution.  The December 11thexperience at Mess Hall in Rogers Park presents various forms of sustainableart through community-driven works, educational scenarios, patterns, andhandmade objects. 

 

ArtistsJerico Prater, Cori Williams and Elspeth Vance engage the community throughon-site projects: Prater provides a method to communally craft wallpaper,Williams supplies context and materials for community castle-building, andVance collects and disperses secrets. 

 

Experientialworkshops by Etta Sandry and Camila Rosas invite participants to cook and eat;Sandry offers solutions for the public to preserve local food while Rosasshares her heritage through pancakes. Richard Chiang demonstrates recycledorigami-folding techniques and Abbie Wilson facilitates the playful use of public spaces through thedistribution of “guerilla swings”. 

 

ChristinaMcClelland, Bridges Black and Felisa Prieto present patterns: McClellandthrough commuting schedules, Black in the form handmade emergency ponchos, andPrieto through assembled fabric scraps.  

 

MelissaLeandro engages participants by sharing accessories that comment on socialtrends, and Josie Gluck offers agricultural beads for temporary adornment andfuture growth.

 

Unitedby their common goal to distribute sustainable art, these twelve artists cometogether for one night at Mess Hall. Come to participate, leave “gifted.” 

 

MessHall is an experimental cultural center. It is a place where visual art,radical politics, creative urban planning, applied ecological design and otherthings intersect and inform each other.
