NationalEssential Information: “Derivatives” is an exhibition to be physically based in Chicago, concerning notions of interconnectedness and influence at this moment. Utilizing websites like Chicago Artists Resource and other on-line resources, resident artists of Project 465 in Chicago are making a no fee open call to entry for all creators regardless of medium or discipline.
This call to entry specifically asks for original work in response to the digital image of the painting “God would have mercy. Jon Rambo won’t.” created by Project 465 resident artist Tom Walther. At the end of the exhibition, he is interested in trading that work for the piece chosen from the group of submissions.. A juried panel has been assembled for those responding to Walther’s work from members of the visual arts, poetry, and dance communities who will then select one work from the collection of on-line submissions they feel most resonates with the resident artist’s original piece. The artist will only monitor the incoming responses and follow up with those artists reaching out.
All entries are to electronically submitted (see formatting below). The selected artist(s) will be notified by e-mail and invited to exhibit their work alongside the original piece in Gallery 131 at the River East Art Center during October, as a participant of Chicago Artist Month. At the end of the exhibition, the artist and creator will be given the option of exchanging their works. Participants may also be asked to participate in a panel discussion about the exhibition.
Eligibility: Artists, writers/poets, dancers/choreographers, filmmakers, performance artists, or most any other maker of works who are US residents over 18.
Exhibition Dates: Opening reception on October 30, 6:00-9:00pm. Derivatives will run from October 30 – November 25, 2009
