This exhibit includes six contemporary artists (Anastasia Mak, Benton Lenz, Brad Pogatetz, Deirdre Fox, Helena Engel, Peter Gray), and aims to integrate our very diverse styles and  mediums, that include photography, painting, mixed medium, installation and sculpture. We sought  the P&C for this show, as a hub for interconnectivity of artists, art and audiences. Although at first sight our more contemporary type of work seems to diverge from the Palette and Chisel, an historic venue, classic in its approach to the visual arts, we like the opportunity to connect and interact with this space and their audiences.

Having previously connected with these artists in different Chicago shows, and admiring their work, after further researching them online, got their contact details and reached out to them through the internet. Since then, we emailed back and forth, staying connected, about the possibility of this show, and about how we all interact with other artists and the audience online. We brainstormed over the web about the show design and details. We would like to not only connect to the audience physically with the show at the venue in Chicago, but also at a larger scale. The internet can reach an audience beyond physical location limitations, meaning in other geographic regions, so we will have a web presence with the visuals and commentary from the show. The idea is to obtain comments from the audience and post them as an interaction mechanism. We created a page in Facebook whith information and details about the exhibit, as a place for you to post comments and feedback, by becoming a fan of 'HUB ART EXHIBIT', at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chicago-IL/HUB-ART-EXHIBIT/143242497176.

Organization Description:

The mission of The Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts is to foster growth in the visual arts, provide a place for serious artists to work, and enrich the community with programs of art education, appreciation and exhibitions. In recent times, the support of the Norris Foundation, the McCormick Foundation, the Jane Ellen Murray Foundation and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, a dedicated staff, volunteers and the advocacy of nationally and internationally recognized artists have helped the Academy to realize this mission and to expand services and programs.

The founding members were evening students at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1895. They wanted to paint from the model under daylight, which was rather difficult since most of them worked six days a week and the Art Institute did not offer Sunday programs. Charles J. Mulligan, a member of this group, was an assistant to sculptor Lorado Taft. He was able to persuade Taft to rent the fledgling organization part of his seventh floor studio in the old Athenaeum Building on Va 豩఺ren Street in Chicago. Taft was in the habit of maintaining large, ostentatious studios - more to impress prospective clients than from need for such space. Within a short time, the Palette & Chisel membership multiplied.

In 1921, to accommodate their burgeoning numbers, members pooled their money and purchased a three story Italianate mansion at 1012 North Dearborn. It was one of the first buildings to be built in the neighborhood after the great fire of 1871. Founding member Fred Larson and several others guaranteed the mortgage using their own homes as collateral.
