- Zina Castanuela: Installations in sculptural handmade paper. "I am very interested in physical environments and boundaries and use of humans and their interaction within the space. Using light, space and organic forms I create spaces that are activated by the viewer. The viewer is invited to interpret the installation through touch, site, and their own movement and is invited to explore the space on his/her own terms. My forms are based on forms that are found in nature and are created using handmade paper from natural plant materials including abaca, flax and cotton. Also used in these sculptures is wire and pigment." Zina is currently an MFA candidate at the Center for Book and Paper in Chicago. She uses her 20 years of experience in environmental and print graphic design as her basis for her work. She has previously shown her work in Seoul, Korea, Ox-bow in Saugatuck, Michigan and locally at the Vespine Gallery.
- Brian Graves: Layered with meaning, text creating art. "The technique used in my paintings is layering text and paint upon text; words and paint, words and paint, and more words and paint. Colors and words evoke different moods from deep down. For this show, I am experimenting with stencils, while staying true to my signature style of text layering. Individual works will reference the impact of music; sex, drugs, rock and roll; and the global warming crisis." Brian resides in the Andersonville neighborhood in Chicago and teaches at Murray Language Academy in Hyde Park."
- Alex Aubry: Photomontage and calligraphy exploring contemporary Middle East identities. Alex is a Chicago based Paris-born architect who is also the culture/design writer for the online lifestyle magazine Dia Diwan and creator of The Polyglot blog. Rooted in his upbringing in places as diverse as Paris, London, Bahrain, and Hong Kong, his work is an exploration of cultural fusions and societies in flux between tradition and modernity. Having worked in the past with both collage and calligraphy, this is the first time both mediums have been brought together in his work, which combines digital art with handicraft. This project was done in conjunction with the upcoming special film screening, “Directors from Beyond Veil,” at within(Reason) on Oct. 17, which highlights the work of two of the Middle East’s up-and-coming female directors. Learn more and RSVP for that event here. The films shown will be Zeina Durra’s short, The Seventh Dog, followed by Nadine Labaki’s highly acclaimed feature, Caramel.
