The Art and Craft of Skateboard Design Mondays 7-10 pm Beginning September 8, 2008 6 weeks $225 The Art and Craft of Skateboard Design introduces students to the multifaceted process of skateboard deck fabrication. The program covers a broad spectrum of art making practices from wood veneer lamitaion and fine woodworking to graphic design, drawing and painting. The students begin by learning the process of thin air wood lamination. Thin layers of maple veneer are glued together, placed over a styrofoam form and inserted into an airtight bag. The air inside the bag is then drawn out using a specially designed pump and one way valve. The atmospheric pressure surrounding the veneer bends the wood over the styrofoam form, allowing the glue to dry over night and give the deck its distinctive shape. This part of the process is done in assembly line fashion, requiring teamwork and communication. The students then learn how to individually shape and san their boards using wood rasps and sandpaper. After their boards are refined, students are taught various painting and design techniques to create their graphics including stenciling, masking and collage. The goal of the Art and Craft of Skateboard Design is to broaden the scope of the participants' artistic horizons by exposing students to various processes and relating them to a common outcome. http://www.galaxiechicago.com
