Modernism, Modernity, and 20th Century Art
This 8-week class is offered downtown at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center.
Teacher Recertification CPDUs: 20
Course Description
This course offers an introduction to key developments in 20th century art. One objective is to define the visual characteristics of works grouped under rubrics like Cubism, Futurism, and Minimalism. Another goal is to differentiate works with otherwise similar visual characteristics based on the unique circumstances surrounding each piece’s production, reception, and distribution. Classes are structured around the notions of “modernism” and “modernity” to unpack what these concepts actually meant to artists and how the use of such terms by historians can obfuscate important material evidence and art practices.
Many works will be viewed firsthand at local museums; entrance fees are not included in the tuition.
Instructor: Michael Tymkiw
Mr. Tymkiw holds an MA and an MBA from the University of Chicago. His doctoral research in the University’s Department of Art History focuses on 20th century art and the messy relationship between modernism and propaganda.
