These days the printed books that were previously published by publishers now can be read on line as ebooks. What is the future? Instead of having to interact with computers through not-so-intuitive and sometimes even counter-intuitive devices like a computer mouse or trackpad, soon users will be able to control their computers doing natural human movements such as gestures, whole-body movement, eye movement, and perhaps even such things as facial expressions. Is it the end for books as we know them? Question the survival of paper, books, libraries in this digital age. The process of sending artworks through the mail, with the envelope, the stamp and the postmark as entire part of the mail-art-object make this process to what we call MailArt. Since 1986 we call mail-artists also networkers because they are active in/with several "media": music, computer (internet, e-mail), fax, copy-art, performance, small-press, artists' books, etc. 1. Send the application form, artist resume/CV, artist statement, 1 - 3 still image work samples OR short video (YouTube) by email and application fee by PayPal ($35) 2. In the coming months roving project space Midas Touch Projects will be curating a series of short video pieces to be aired as 1-hour segments on Public Access TV, tentatively once a month in Manhattan and more frequently in the Kingston area of upstate NY (as well as online). For this program we are looking in particular for video art, short film (preferably non-narrative), music videos, and any other moving image media (digital projects, etc.) that could potentially be broadcast on television.

An established arts and entertainment organization is launching a new permanent art space in Wicker Park (near Damen blue line) and is currently seeking proposals for Instillations in our new large gallery space.

The curators & the organization launching this art space have previously worked with the following highlighted artists, talent, & exhibitions: John Campbell (picturesforsadchildren.com, Artbeat Live, Art On Track 2008, Rotofugi, smART show, 25th Anniversary of Slam Extravaganza, Saul Williams, HBO Def Poets, Lollapalooza Nominated DJs, & various Grammy Award winning musicians.

The total gallery is about 1000 square feet, and the space that we are looking to show an installation in is about 12 by 12 feet, white wall raw gallery space. We are especially interested in artworks that involve light, but that is not a requirement.

Genius Loci: Learning from Nature’s Muse

Call for greater Chicago area visual artists, designers, and architects to participate in Genius Loci: Learning from Nature’s Muse an exhibition sponsored by the Friends of Ryerson Woods (FRW) and curated by Franck Mercurio, independent arts consultant, curator, and writer.

The exhibition opens Sunday, July 8, 2012 and closes Friday, August 31, 2012. The venue is Brushwood, a historic home located on the property of the Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area, or Ryerson Woods, near Deerfield, Illinois.

Genius Loci is one of four art exhibitions currently being planned for Brushwood as part of FRW’s Lessons from the Prairie series of public programs for 2012. The series offers perspectives on the ways human society can learn from our prairie ecosystem in particular, and natural systems broadly speaking. The Concept:

The ancient Romans believed that every place on Earth is protected by a guardian spirit or genius loci, literally “spirit of place.” Today, we use this Latin phrase to mean the collective characteristics—cultural, environmental, and psychological—that define a specific locale and distinguish it from all others.Throughout history, some of the most successful works of art and architecture were created by people who captured the genius loci of natural places—their works seem to fit seamlessly within the environments that inspired them. This legacy of listening to and learning from the genius loci continues today as a new generation of artists and designers responds to Nature. What lessons are contemporary artists and designers deriving from different natural regions such as grasslands, mountains, forests, and coastal areas? The group exhibition, Genius Loci: Learning from Nature’s Muse, addresses this central question.

The Exhibition:

As mentioned above, we are interested in displaying works by visual artists, designers, and architects. Emphasis and priority will be given to new works of art and new design projects. The exhibition will feature, but is not limited to: paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photographs, installations, video/film, new media, graphic design, design drawings, and presentation renderings. Between 10 to 12 artists and designers will be selected for inclusion in the exhibition.

Works must demonstrate a response to a specific natural place, ecosystem, or habitat. Which particular genius loci serves as your muse? What lessons has it taught you as an artist or a designer? How does your work fit harmoniously within a particular natural place, either literally or figuratively?

Works will be displayed in the gallery spaces of Brushwood and on the grounds immediately surrounding the house. This historic structure is located within the 556-acre Ryerson Woods forest preserve surrounded by woods, prairie, and the Des Plaines River providing a natural setting with a genius loci all its own.

Inclusion in this exhibition will bring greater visibility of the artists’ or designers’ work to a North Shore audience. Announcements of the exhibition (including the names of all selected artists) will be promoted on the FRW website, eblasts, Facebook, Twitter, and through press releases to area media outlets. A PDF of the official announcement will be given to all participating artists and designers for distribution.

Requirements for submissions:

Artists/designers must live, work, or teach within the greater Chicago region (including northwestern Indiana and southeastern Wisconsin).
Please submit no less than 3 and no more than 6 JPG images of your work. File size should be a minimum of 300 dpi. Please indicate title, size and medium of each piece. Only electronic submissions will be accepted.
Submission does not guarantee inclusion in show.
In addition to electronic images, please submit a brief (100 words or less) statement describing your work and how it fits within the conceptual framework of the show.
Please keep in mind that all flat artwork (photographs, paintings, prints, etc.) selected for inclusion in the exhibition will need to be framed or mounted to rigid substrate. Brushwood is a historic building and walls cannot be punctured. Instead, artwork is hung using the Walker hanging system.

Schedule:

Deadline for submissions is Friday, March 30.
Response to submissions is Monday, April 16.
Opening reception will be on Sunday, July 8, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
If selected, artist attendance at opening event will be mandatory.
Selected artists will be required to sign an Artist Agreement and deliver pieces to Brushwood no later than Monday, July 2

Franck Mercurio is an independent arts consultant, curator, and writer based in Chicago. Before starting his own consultancy business, Franck served for eight years as an exhibition developer for the Field Museum. He recently curated the Art of Green (10 July 2011 – 31 August 2011) for Friends of Ryerson Woods, an exhibition that featured the work of twelve regional artists and designers who are creating art and designing objects in sustainable ways. Friends of Ryerson Woods
Created in 1982, Friends of Ryerson Woods works closely with the Lake County Forest Preserves to help protect this rare ecosystem for present and future generations. Friends of Ryerson Woods sponsors environmental education programs and projects to contribute to the resources at Ryerson Woods and inspire and inform people about the importance of our remaining natural areas.

Mission
Friends of Ryerson Woods uses the unique setting of Ryerson Woods to catalyze people's understanding, life-long appreciation, and behavior in support of nature. Friends accomplishes its mission in partnership with the Lake County Forest Preserve District.

Vision
Friends of Ryerson Woods will be a steward of the natural sanctuary that the Woods provide, ensuring its continuance as a quiet retreat. The historic buildings and grounds will be a center for training, education and discourse about nature for all skill levels and age groups, and an incubator for innovative approaches to environmental issues. Friends will convene organizations of the Chicago metropolitan region to seek creative, collaborative partnerships, providing a rich array of interdisciplinary programs that build a tradition of quality and dynamism.

22 is looking for entries for its third gallery exhibit, Compression Testing. 22 is a new multi-use creative space in Berwyn, just west of downtown Chicago. We opened in early December, and in January we presented our first curated gallery show, to great success. Now we're putting together our second juried show, which will focus primarily on an exploration of a single material: corrugated cardboard.

We have two goals at 22: to showcase the work of emerging and established artists and designers from within the Chicago area, and to bring innovative and imformative work to our community from the rest of the world. To reach these goals, we're positioning ourselves as a design studio and flexible art space, serving as a venue for gallery exhibitions, markets, installations, performances, and so on. We're very passionate about our space supporting the work of both designers and artists -- it's our belief that there is no concrete distinction between the two.

With that in mind, our decision to focus on one particular marterial with this show speaks to the importance of "material" within both art and design. Much of art and design is fundamentally based on gaining an intimate understanding of material properties, and then exploiting those properties for an expressive purpose. We've chosen corrugated cardboard because of its ubiquitousness and importance in solving purely technical design problems, and because of its growing presence in contemporary art, as work grapples with questions of permanence, accessibility, and longevity, and connections to identity, portraiture, reuse, shelter, and so on.

For this show, we're looking for work that is primarily constructed from corrugated cardboard. Other materials can be included, of course, but the bulk of each piece presented in the show needs to be based around corrugated cardboard. What that means is entirely up to you. We're looking for 2d work and 3d work, "art" work and "design" work, conceptual work, ornamental work, temporary work, permanent work, scientific work, engineering work, etc...

The show will open with a reception on Friday, March 16, and then it will be up in the 22 space for four weekends. The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Friday, March 2. Feel free to submit up to five pieces for consideration. Work must be gallery-ready to be considered, but, due to the material-based restrictions of the show, we're open to non-standard display methods. We encourage you to make new work for this show -- you can submit in-process pieces, but they must be gallery-ready by the time the show opens. There is no submission fee.
