Organized by the Alliance of Artists Communities and hosted by Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, the American Creativity At Risk symposium explored the nature of human creativity and its significance in a wide range of disciplines, taking artists' communities as a model and a metaphor for fostering pure research and innovation in all sectors of society and culture. The symposium resulted in a call to action addressing the challenges and opportunities of restoring creativity as a priority in public policy, cultural philanthropy, and education. Symposium speakers and panelists included Robert MacNeil, Lewis Hyde, Brendan Gill, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Mary Schmidt Campbell, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Ellen Winner, David Liddle, Mary Catherine Bateson, Ned Hall, and Stewart Brand, among others. It convenes sponsors of performing arts events with touring performing artists and their managements for the purpose of planning future performance seasons.

ATHE focus groups offer members a direct way of getting involved in ATHE around issues of common concern. There are curerntly twenty three focus groups representing various areas of interest in theatre arts and studies: Acting Program, American Theatre and Drama Society; Association for Asian Performance; Association of Theatre Movement Educators; Black Theatre Association; Design and Technology; Directing Program; Dramaturgy Program; International Brecht Society; Lesbian and Gay Theatre; Music Theatre/Dance; Performance Studies; Playwriting Program; Theatre Management; Religion and Theatre; Senior Theatre Research & Performance; Theatre and Social Change; Theatre as a Liberal Art; Theatre History; Theory and Criticism; Two-Year College Program; Voice and Speech Trainer's Association; and Women and Theatre.

Individual members include post-secondary faculty in theatre and related fields, graduate students, and theatre and performance artists in universities, commercial venues, and community-based and alternative theatres. Members receive a variety of benefits including subscriptions to publications, reduced rates at the national conference, a listing in the ATHE directory, a members-only e-mail list, and a chance to participate in specific interest groups.

Annual conference of performing arts presenters - the largest international performing arts marketplace of its kind. Touring artists and companies, artist representatives, booking agencies, presenting groups, consultants and vendors, who are APAP members are eligible to exhibit or submit showcase listings. APAP also offers a video showcase library on-site for artists who are unable to exhibit.

Business and Presenter Memberships. Business members (Artists, Artist Managers, Consultants and Vendors) are entitled to: exhibit at Annual Members Conference; access presenter list through the Information Exchange Database; a subscription to Inside Arts Magazine; list represented artist roster in the Online Membership Directory/Artist Roster Database and in the annual Artist Roster issue of Inside Arts; free job postings in the Arts Presenters JobBank. Presenter and Programmer Members have access to funding opportunities (travel and audience development) and Brochure Exchange, artist rosters and the annual members conference.
