Fitzmaurice Voicework® was developed by theatre practitioner and healer Catherine Fitzmaurice originally to enable actors, singers, and anyone who uses their voice in a public forum, to discover their authentic voice.  While the work is now taught in theatre training programs across the US, and is beginning to establish itself in Europe,  Fitzmaurice Voicework's roots in the work of Wilhelm Reich, Bioenergetics, yoga and shiatsu massage, mean that it is now also being used as an approach to healing for non-performers.  Whether the work is training or healing depends on your intent and your focus.

The work is based on the belief that our emotional/personal histories are stored in our musculature as habitual patterns of muscular tension.  Reich called these patterns of tension, 'armoring', for they do indeed armor us against the world.  At one point in our lives this protection was valuable to us, but  many people continue to hold onto these patterns of tension that bind the body and constrain the breath to the point that what once protected us, now becomes a major impediment to our capacity to feel and express a full range of emotions, allow intimacy, or find the full resonant and emotionally connected and expressive voice that is our birthright.

For actors and singers the work also facilitates a vivid and creative engagement with the text, particularly useful when working with heightened language. In releasing patterns of muscular tension in the body  Fitzmaurice Voicework also facilitates free and expressive movement. For non-performers discovering the deeply connected voice that is within us all is a powerful and freeing experience in and of itself.

Organization Description:

Life Force Arts Center (LFAC), 3148 N Lincoln, Chicago, is Chicago’s spiritual art gallery and performance space. Our mission is creating spiritual awakening and transformation through the visual, literary and performing arts.

The Center presents spiritually based dance, theater, music, performance art, authors, and visual artists of all spiritual traditions. LFAC defines spiritual art as art that flows from spiritual practice, art that strives to connect the audience with Spirit, and art that creates spiritual healing, transformation, or awakening.

At LFAC, we recognize and nurture the fact that Spirit moves through an individual to create in many forms of professional practice: art, teaching and healing. Spiritual artists often are teachers and healers as well. LFAC is a place where the public (audiences, students, clients, participants) can partake of all the modalities in which a practitioner is inspired to create.

LFAC offers art exhibits, performances and spiritual workshops in our 1200 square foot Main Space. Visit our Gift Shop to purchase artwork, CD;s and DVD's, jewelry, books and other products of the artists, teachers and healers who present at our Center. The space is available for rental as well, and is perfect for workshops, meetings, parties yoga, dance, theater and other events.

Life Force Arts Center opened in 2008, and is operated by Life Force Arts Foundation, which was founded in 1988 as a non-profit, tax exempt 501 (c) 3 organization to present the   modern dance and performance work of Joan Forest Mage. As Joan developed the deeper, spiritual aspects of her work as shamanic practice, the company grew to support the exploration of the art-spirituality connection.
