Seeking expert Theater Artist/ Educator/ Administrator Columbia College Chicago is an urban, generous admissions institution of over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students, emphasizing arts, media, and communications in a liberal education setting. The College is seeking applicants for the Chair of its nationally prominent Theater Department. The Theater Department at Columbia College Chicago is one of the nation’s largest undergraduate programs with a diverse student body of over seven hundred majors. The Department is production oriented and offers BA and/or BFA degrees in acting, directing, design, technical theater, musical theater, and playwriting. The department faculty is a unique ensemble of theater artists/educators who continue to have active professional careers that allow them to provide the most up-to-date and effective training for students who are seeking direct entry into the profession or preparation for additional graduate training. The position is available on June 1, 2009. Review of applications will begin on September 1, 2008, and will continue until the position is filled. Requirements: • Candidates should have extensive experience as a theater artist, educator and administrator. • Candidates should have proven administrative experience in both the educational and artistic worlds. • Candidates must have a terminal degree (PhD or MFA); however, a history of distinguished professional service or practice may substitute for the terminal degree requirement. • The candidate’s background will include the artistic directorship of a professional theater company, the leadership of a professional theater education program or some combination of those or comparable experiences. • Candidates are expected to have considerable teaching experience at the college level. Expectations:• Candidates should be prepared to manage and further develop an active and expanding theater curriculum, as well as tenured, tenure-track, adjunct faculty and staff. • Candidates should have the ability to lead faculty through the assessment process, and have an interest in convening ongoing, directed faculty reflection about aims and goals of the Theater Department. • The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach in his/her particular area of theatrical expertise. • Candidates should have an interest in how theater interfaces with other arts disciplines and a commitment to generating and nurturing powerful and effective inter-departmental programs within the college. • Candidates should also have an interest in how theater interfaces with society at large, with a particular commitment to forging new partnerships with local and regional social, educational and arts organizations as well as a commitment to coalition building with other arts institutions nationally and internationally. • Candidates should have a strong interest in and commitment to developing new streams of earned and donated income for the department.
