Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard, Gorky’s Summerfolk

Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard, Gorky’s Summerfolk

This 6-week class is offered downtown at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center.

Teacher Recertification CPDUs: 15

Course Decsription

In the final moments of Anton Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard, the family orchard is sold and chopped down to make way for a subdivision of vacation homes. What happens when Russia’s emerging class of professionals – lawyers, doctors, engineers and the like – rent those homes for the summer? That’s exactly what Maxim Gorky (1868–1936) imagined when he wrote Summerfolk (1904), an examination of Russia’s shifting class attitudes before the Revolution. This class will study both plays in English translation.

Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard, Gorky’s Summerfolk

This 6-week class is offered downtown at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center.

Suzuki and Viewpoints Intensive
Mondays-Fridays, July 7-18, 9:30am-1:30pm
$595 ($300 non-refundable deposit due at registration) After a highly successful program at Links Hall in summer 2007, New York-based SITI Company returns to facilitate another two-week intensive workshop in the physical vocabularies and basic theories of the two distinct methods of actor training used in their productions: the Viewpoints and the Suzuki Method. One of the most important aspects of SITI's work is the teaching of their training techniques.

SITI Company
Suzuki and Viewpoints Intensive
Mondays-Fridays, July 7-18, 9:30am-1:30pm
$595 ($300 non-refundable deposit due at registration) After a highly successful program at Links Hall in summer 2007, New York-based SITI Company returns to facilitate another two-week intensive workshop in the physical vocabularies and basic theories of the two distinct methods of actor training used in their productions: the Viewpoints and the Suzuki Method. One of the most important aspects of SITI's work is the teaching of their training techniques. It is through the dialogue between Suzuki and Viewpoints that the philosophy and technique of SITI Company is continually explored, revitalized, and articulated. more...

You will learn how to upgrade your fundraising program from one that is merely "transaction-based" to one that is profitably "relationship-based." You will learn to become truly donor-centric and avoid counter-productive -- yet common -- "donor-indifferent" behaviors. You'll take a guided tour of the eight steps that guarantee good relationships.

Managing People

Leaders that we talk with describe a new bind for arts and cultural organizations. At the same time that the economy is making it harder to win audiences and donors, talented staff people -- their most critical resource – are getting harder to attract, retain, and keep motivated. The NAS Managing People seminar helps you find your way through this bind, by helping you create a successful environment where your goals, people, processes, and culture are aligned across your entire organization.

Managing People will take place in Chicago on July 10-11. Two leading business professors, Diane Burton from MIT and Jesper Sorensen from Stanford, will provide you and your team with a new way of thinking about human resource strategies. Your team will learn how to make the most of your organization’s most valuable resource—its staff. more...
