Sustain Gallery and Work Space

Sustain aims to foster expression, education, sustainability and growth through creative work. We seek to engage our local community, as well as queer and artistic communities all around in being an inclusive and accessible space. This intends to be a resource for our Uptown community, as well as women, queer and trans folks, people of color, the differently abled and the up and coming artists that exist within those communities. As a space utilized to organize, educate, and exhibit work, experiences, and beliefs. In advocating for inclusivity we maintain an open call and submission for gallery shows, workshops, individual works and other project proposals that parallel our ideas.

Sustain's gallery is used to showcase artists collections of individual/collaborative work and to hold larger gallery shows. Besides the gallery, we utilize the space to sell zines, books, craftwork and artwork by Chicago and non-Chicago artists. This supports artists in the pursuit of financial stability through artistic expression, something Sustain believes needs to be an attainable possibility!

Our work space is open for artists to create and share ideas with like minded individuals. Sustain's work space aims to foster dialogue, informed critique, community and collaboration. And be a reliable and sustainable source for materials, projects, ideas, culture, and education. We think it is important to emphasize that this is a space serving queer and trans folks, people of color, the differently abled and women. And intend to be most resourceful for people of those communities. Though this does not mean to exclude any person that identifies differently.

Sustain is a large ground-floor, corner unit belonging to beautiful vintage apartment building. We are easily locatable by our neon sign and the large pillar that creates our corner. Our gallery is lined with North and East facing windows that strech along the length of our space. Inside, our unfinished ceiling is 13' tall. And the floor features vintage black & white porcelain tiles with spots of concrete patching.

Our gallery space is adjustable and broken up into a primary gallery wall, two portable walls and two smaller walls. The primary wall streatches just under 28' and is along the South side of the space. Our portable walls both measure approximately 7.5' tall with 10.5" wide sculpture ledges. The mobile wall facing East is 9' long. The other mobile wall is in a North facing window on the West side of the gallery and is 11' long. It is primarily used for street viewing, but can be moved to allow for viewing while inside the gallery. Our smaller walls face south and are on the North side of the gallery.

The back half of the space is a common work area for staff and exhibiting artists. There is shelving, a drying rack, table space, stools, and other resources. The workspace allows for storage of artwork and personal items.

We share a common room accesible through our back door with two other small buisness. In this area there is seating, two gender neutral bathrooms and paint closet/sink. In case of an emergency the back area leads to a second exit via the apartment building.

Building Policies:

We acknowledge no space can be completely safe and free from oppression. Within our work space, gallery and communities we do our best, and ask that others be proactive in creating safer spaces for women, people of color, queer and trans folks and the differently abled. Creating supportive, non-threatening and accessible environments that encourage open-mindedness, respect, a willingness to learn from others, as well as physical and mental safety.

Everyone visiting and working at Sustain is asked to be aware of their language and behavior, and to think about whether it might be harmful to others. This is no space for violence, for touching people without their consent, for being intolerant of someone’s religious beliefs or lack thereof, for being creepy, sleazy, racist, ageist, sexist, hetero-sexist, trans-phobic, able-bodiest, classist, sizist, or for using any other behavior or language that may perpetuate oppression.

There can be no definitive list of behaviors / comments / situations which make people feel uncomfortable. So one of the best and most important things to do is to concentrate on how your actions/language can is affecting others, and modify your behavior as appropriate. Sustain aims to be a space that fosters expression, acceptance, sustainability and growth through creative work for people belonging to marginalized communities. And so we uphold an expectation for ourselves, our work and our friends to respect the identities, experiences, and histories of the people around us.

Sustain is a minority oriented space. Respect the pronouns and names of everyone.  Do not assume anyone’s gender identity, sexual preference, survivor status, economic status, ethnicity, health, etc. Respect other’s experiences and histories! Accept that there is oppression you cannot experience or understand. Recognize that oppression has deep roots and is caused by many sources, your privilege is connected with someone else’s oppression.

There may be certain situations when you feel comfortable using language which some may find offensive or derogatory,  Sustain is not an appropriate space for this. You do not know who will overhear you, and how they will react.

Sustain is DRY. There are no drugs or alcohol permitted to be used within the space during events or otherwise. Sustain reserves the ability to ask any person who is in violation of our guidelines/space policies to leave.

Security Policies:

If you experience harassment, abuse, or violence at Sustain or if a perpetrator of violence is interfering with your participation in an event/discussion, please approach a Sustain community member whom you feel comfortable talking to. They are here to help with any conflicts arising from the violation of our policies. We are here to maintain a safer space.

Our community is what empowers us to enforce these rules. We actively strive to respect and understand our women, queer and trans, people of color, and differently abled friends. And as stated earlier, Sustain has the absolute ability to ask anyone who is in violation of our safer space policies to leave when asked.
