Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble challenges, engages and inspires audiences both onstage and in the classroom, through innovative, multidisciplinary storytelling in the genre of Tanztheatre, which unites all art media and to achieve an all-embracing, radical change in humankind. As an Ensemble, we collaboratively create thought-provoking arts performances and educational outreach programs incorporating elements of theatre, music, movement, visual arts and literary text. We are dedicated to “performance with a purpose.”
Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble envisions a society in which individuals are actively aware of their social responsibility and are engaged in making a change for the benefit of humankind through the arts.
Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble is a Chicago-based multidisciplinary arts organization. CDE is dedicated to creating performances and partnerships that bring about change in the world around us through our performance ensemble and outreach programs.
Inspired by the German Expressionist movement, "tanztheater", the ensemble uses the written word as the structure and body movement as the primary tool to create original and compelling narratives that inspire new awareness to wide-ranging audiences.
In that same spirit, our performance pieces explore themes that are socially relevant and incorporate a range of artistic disciplines. For example, Unraveling Bill uses monologue, dance, and original music to tell the story of Theresa, whose brother committed suicide after returning from military service in Iraq. The piece allowed us to talk about soldier suicide, which is unfortunately an increasingly relevant issue. In 2010, more soldiers committed suicide than lost their lives in combat. In sharing Bill and Theresa’s story, hopefully others might be helped.
CDE’s outreach programs, Kids Project and Teen Artist Project, works with over 3,000 students in the Chicagoland area bringing low-cost, multidisciplinary arts education to students who would not otherwise have such opportunities. We teach an integrated arts curriculum that makes the creative process immediately available to the students, and encourage them to draw inspiration from their own lives and from what they are learning in school. We believe that arts education greatly contributes to students’ holistic development as confident, creative, positive contributors to society.
