Templeton directs two plays: Rudens is a very seldom performed work, based on The Rope by the Roman comic playwright T. Maccius Plautus. It combines a number of strategies of textual conversion, and is translated to English phonetically by using the sound of the original language.
Bluebeard is about two people imagining how each other think, what each other fears or desires, and what each fears or desires of the other. It is a ventriloquial work, in which the onstage action or even speaker may belie the subject of the speech.
Fiona Templeton works across the disciplines of poetry, theatre, and installation. She is founder-director of The Relationship, and has published several books.
Collaborators:
Joel Craig lives in Chicago, working as an art director and deejay. His poems have appeared in several publications, and he is co-founder and curator for The Danny's Reading Series.
Laura Goldstein is a writer and multi-media and sound artist who currently teaches at Loyola University and performs and collaborates in Chicago. Her work is widely published and her chapbook is due out this spring.
Pam Osbey is the author of ten poetry books. She is an educator in the Chicago Public School System, and works with several literary organizations, including the Poetry Center of Chicago and the Chicago Humanities Festival.
Returning from One Place to Another: A Poet’s Theater Showcase, May 2-25

The works featured in Returning from One Place to Another come out of a tradition which seeks to use theatrical space as a medium for poetic composition. While this description fits some major figures of the theatrical avant-garde, such as Antonin Artaud or Richard Foreman, the artists that are central to this work view the theater as an extension of their writing practice. Drawing inspiration from the operas of Gertrude Stein or the plays of Frank O’Hara, each program consists of a set of works for performance that retain a focus on language and structure while potentially abandoning traditional elements of narrative or staging. In each program, a visiting artist is working with local collaborators for the first time to create a novel theatrical evening. Links Hall and Nicole Garneau's UPRISING this week at Manifest, May 16

(Cultural Studies undergraduate) lead a group of T-shirted performers
reflecting on love and revolution. Marking 40 years since the political
upheaval of the 1968, Garneau's series of UPRISINGs create public
demonstrations toward a more humane present and future.

UPRISING
is a series of monthly, site-specific performances broadly exploring
the practice of revolution. Performances will be directed by Nicole
Garneau and co-created by Nicole and performers.
Events will
be purposely live, public, temporal, and participatory. They will be
stagings of possibilities for a humane world. They will be attempts at
making the world in which we want to live, and then inviting people
directly and immediately inside it.
Performances will be
marked by a commitment to flexible structure, ambitious intentions, and

Richard Armstrong brings 40 years of expertise in human sound to this three day intensive. His practice is firmly rooted in the belief that the voice is a manifestation of the psyche, the "muscle of the soul." This vocal training workshop focuses on exploring and expanding range and character, through use of breath, movement, body alignment, and physical grounding. There is a special emphasis on the connection between the voice and the personality of each participant. Open to all performance creators regardless of their vocal awareness/practice.
Richard Armstrong founded Roy Hart Theatre in 1960’s France. His work as teacher, director, and performer has taken him to over 30 countries, and he is Associate Arts Professor for New York University’s Experimental Theater Wing at the Tisch School of the Arts. www.richardarmstrong.info

Suzuki
is a powerful physical training technique drawing from ballet, martial
arts, Kabuki and other disciplines. Focusing on breath, the center and
the lower body, with stomping, slow movement and explosive gestures,
Suzuki brings attention to the voice and its connection to the body. No
prior Suzuki experience required. Each session will be followed by an
hour-long community practice open to workshop participants as well as
artists with prior Suzuki Training.
Jeremy Sher is
a professional actor in Chicago, who has trained in Suzuki for over
nine years around the country and overseas.

Skinner Releasing Technique™ is a pioneering approach to dancing that has evolved from the simple principle that when we are releasing tension and habitual holding patterns we can move more freely, powerfully, and articulately. Through guided imagery, music, and hands-on partner studies, the practice facilitates a deep kinesthetic experience of movement, and allows the individual to proceed at their own pace. Open to all.

Performing
artists/groups utilizing movement as a core element in their work, are
invited to apply to Links Hall for our LinkUp program. LinkUp is a
program of mutual support and investment between independent Chicago
artists/groups and Links Hall, recognizing the interdependence of
artists and art spaces for the survival and growth of the arts.Links Hall will select four artists/groups that are interested in making their creative home at Links Hall. It is our hope that LinkUp artists will remain active and vital members of the Links Hall community beyond their time in residence.
Selected artists/groups will receive:
Up to 10hrs of rehearsal space per week during weekday mornings and afternoons: October 2008 to March 2009 OR April 2009 to September 2009 (two artists/groups will be scheduled in each period).
Support of a paid mentor during their residency.
Free access to performances and discussions at Links Hall.
One work-in-progress showing at the three-month point of their residency.
A fully produced weekend of performances in the Links Hall Performance Series. .
One professional development workshop in marketing and finance for artists.
A stipend of $750, payable in two installments at the start and mid-point of the residency.

Tim Miller
Queer
identified performing artists and artists addressing queer themes in
their work are invited to apply to Links Hall for the Charged Bodies
Mentorship Program. This program is focused on the development and
presentation of original solo performance, under the mentorship of
critically acclaimed performance artist Tim Miller, and is an
investment in cultivating and supporting queer perspectives in
innovative performance practice within Chicago.
TIM MILLER
is an internationally acclaimed performance artist. Miller's creative
work as a performer and writer explores the artistic, spiritual, and
political topography of his identity as a gay man. Hailed for his humor
and passion, Miller's performances have been presented all over North
America and Europe in such prestigious venues as Yale Repertory
Theatre, the Institute of Contemporary Art (London), the Walker Art
Center (Minneapolis), and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He is the
author of the books SHIRTS & SKIN , BODY BLOWS, and 1001 BEDS,
which won the 2007 Lambda Literary Award for best book in
Drama-Theatre. His solo theater works have been published in the play
collections O Solo Homo and Sharing the Delirium.
Since 1990, Miller has taught performance in the Theater Dept at UCLA
and the Dance program at Cal State LA. He is a co-founder of two of the
most influential performance spaces in the United States: Performance
Space 122 on Manhattan's Lower East Side and Highways Performance Space
in Santa Monica, CA.

Mentorship
will include a $500 stipend, free participation in an intensive
workshop with Tim July 21st-27th, 2008, long-distance mentoring,
another intensive meeting in early October and a presentation of
generated work November 21st and 22nd at Links Hall.

Chicago ordinance threatens small performance venues - ACT IMMEDIATELY
The Chicago City Council will vote on WEDS MAY 14 to pass an ordinance that severely limits small music and performance groups from appearing at local venues under 500 seats.

Hedwig Dances launches its 24th season with the premiere of Earthly Tongues, a new work by artistic director Jan Bartoszek. Earthly Tongues mines the rich terrain of ancestry and memory. With hearty doses of humor and pungency, the dance examines what we know and what we fantasize about our collective and individual origins. The evening also includes Bartoszek's 2002 work, Ache of the Arc, performed on a set of ladders and walls.

Moving Architects (formerly ecnDANCEWORKS) is a contemporary dance
company under the direction of Erin Carlisle Norton. We are seeking
professional modern dancers with developed improvisation, composition,

after 3pm beginning in July for fall and winter performances (possibly
traveling). Dancers are paid for performance.

Plasticene
Physical Theater offers one of the most inspiring and most challenging
workshops of the summer! Plasticene's Intensive is a great way to get
physical with one of Chicago's most critically-acclaimed experimental
theatre companies. This exciting workshop emphasizes acting and theater
founded in the body, space, and objects. Plasticene's work has gained
city-wide recognition as one of the most innovative opportunities for
performers and theater students to gain a heightened awareness of
themselves and the use of space and the body in theater.
The
Intensive is a perfect introduction to the tools and process used to
develop Plasticene performances. The process is a mixture of diverse
techniques and experiments from Plasticene as well as many traditions
including yoga, physical improvisation, corporal mime, Boal, Grotowski,
Zaporah, and contact improvisation. This session builds links from
physical control to spatial awareness to contact improvisation to
object encounters and culminates in group creation. Each day includes
a warm-up, technique and improvisation. Live, improvised music
accompanies three classes.

The five-workshop series aims to help adult artists develop a wider contextual understanding of the impact of the various cultural Diasporas and to identify their own connections to this geopolitical space using the tools of conversation and creativity. Participants will utilize various multimedia techniques and tools of performance including audio, video, movement and speech. The end goal is to cultivate the artists' perspectives to be more attuned to identity, culture, race, gender, and class issues via a "total performer experience".

Central to the concept of Diaspora is the idea of home. Be it mythical or actual, home is conventionally the place where Disporic subjects come from and anticipate returning. It often thought of as space of belonging, a safe space, to counter things like displacement, dispersal and exile which is part of the Diasporic experience. However, as black feminist and black queer thinkers have indicated, home is not always an uncomplicated and safe space. This workshop will get participants to interrogate the concept of home through video, embodiment and dance, including traditional dances from Togo, featuring elements from Ewe, Kabye & Losso ceremonial dances.

UIC professor of Latin American Studies Alejandro Madrid leads a guest lecture. Alejandro is a musicologist and cultural theorist whose research focuses on the intersection of modernity, tradition, globalization, and identity in music and expressive culture from Mexico, the U.S.-Mexico border, and the circum-Caribbean. His current research interests include transnational history and method, performance studies, and postnational theory. Following his discussion, will be a music class to explore modes of percussion & storytelling in the Afro-Brazilian and the modern African-American diaspora.
May 20, 5:30-7:30 : Dani Bryant
The philosophy of this Personal Theater Workshop is creatively exploring one's self and applying the personal to art can aid in connection to any material. The opportunity for intimacy and trust provided by this class and demanded by the focus on the personal is an especially important (albeit often demanding and challenging) gift this class has to offer. By building bridges between their experience and the arts, participants build confidence and see their everyday lives as extraordinary stories. The workshop aims to help participants to develop the creativity and confidence to imagine their own lives and explore their personal voices, develop the collective voice of the group and finally to share themselves with the community through theater.

Zephyr Dance’s workshop, led by Artistic Director Michelle Kranicke and Associate Artistic Director Emily Stein, is designed to give undergraduate students as well as professional teaching artists a platform to experience and practice rigorous arts integrated practice. This 12-hour training workshop
gives participants experience integrating modern dance with math, language arts, social studies and science curricula. Participants will be introduced to academic standards, strategies for working in a variety of grade levels and for building a template based on a model that includes teacher planning,
classroom practice, project assessment and documentation.

Upsun in Pennsylvania is a new initiative designed to provide
opportunities to engage in in-depth investigations of choreographic
practices. We have looked for rigorous and sophisticated choreographers
who are also interested in teaching and its relationship to making.
Each choreographer will be there for one week.
SUPA
is located on the campus of Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA, 225
miles southwest of New York City and 90 miles northwest of Washington,
D.C. Workshop participants are housed in the campus dormitories;
cooking facilities are available, as is a shuttle service to markets
and eateries. The program sponsors will host a group dinner each Friday
night. The total fee is a combination of a fee for room and the
workshop fee itself.
