Cabinet of Curiosities: Images from Disparate Worlds
Event Type:
ExhibitFriday, May 2, 2008 - 6:00pm - Saturday, May 31, 2008 - 12:00pm
TOJO Gallery presents Cabinet of Curiosities: Images from Disparate Worlds, a group exhibition by Chicago-based artists Andrew Breen, Anders Johnson, Matt Kelly, and Amelia Kieras. Cabinet of Curiosities is a dynamic collection of images, including macrocosms and microcosms of real and imaginary worlds. The show opens Friday, May 2nd with an artist reception from 6 to 11 pm, and continues through May 31st.
These young artists draw from a variety of sources including topography and tableaux. Andrew Breen’s murky photographs of visceral organisms investigate the structural and perceptual systems of clay bioforms and cultivated bacterial growths. While Anders Johnson’s mural-size scroll drawings of populated cities recall Breughel’s Netherlandish Proverbs, they also reinterpret and establish new connections between various cultural histories. Using a kite and unpredictable winds, Matt Kelly captures striking aerial photos of mundane marks of human presence – footprints in snow, plastic grass fields, and meticulously arranged gardens. Amelia Kieras’ narratives made of tattered book sculptures and illusory photo assemblages include song-inspired drawings, phantasmic panoramas of monsters, and a deconstructed Florentine novel.
