Something good in the hood is coming to Englewood
With the over whelming rash of violence that has swept through Chicago lately, especially with this latest act of senseless and heinous crime waged against the immediate family of Chicago native; singer, Jenifer Hudson, it seems like the south side community of Englewood has led the way in becoming the proverbial black eye of the inner city. Crime has all but erased the proud history of Englewood once being the second busiest business district next to downtown; Home to Sears, Goldblatt's and Wieboldt's department stores. These days residents of Englewood have had more than their fair share of drama, crime and heart ache. Englewood continues to make the news. In the past decade more than 700 people have been murdered there. The magnificent brick houses built after the Great Chicago Fire, built to last for ever, are falling down. There are 2473 vacant buildings and 215 empty lots in Englewood. Forty-three percent of Englewood's population lives below the poverty line. Gangs fight for territory and drugs while Englewood's residents hide behind closed doors and worry and wait. Well in the echoes of our President elect's theme of change, it seems like one organization has come along just in time for this new year of hope; promising to help create a new conversation and attitude amongst Englewood residents.

"Urban Aspirations" a non profit community arts organization, will be sharing a bit of its positive community spirit with this all too battered and bruised neighborhood. Starting January 21st "Urban Aspirations will present "Young Natives" Student Jam Sessions, for Chicago based jazz music students from fifth grade through to College seniors, at Washburn Culinary beautiful new supper club , "Sikia" restaurant, located on the campus of the new Kennedy King College at 6301 South Halstead.

Young Natives" Jam Sessions a free community event at Sikia Restaurant, promises to be a welcomed activity for parents, students, educators and Englewood residents alike. Young music students will get the opportunity to perform freely with their peers and mentors while being supported by the residents of Englewood and serving as an example to other young people that might not have considered a formal music experience. Commencing January 21st '09 and concluding May 20th '09 on the third Wednesday of each the month.

Due to dwindling music programs in the public school system, children were forced to improvise music performance according their own interpretation. One interpretation has been manifested in the art form known as rap. While rap has become a viable and recognized art form, it remains mostly artificial in that it usually employs prerecorded music by other formally trained and noted artists, leaving little room for theoretical scholarship and performance discipline. This has left our children not only lacking in the benefit and beauty of music theory and exploration, but also absent of the desire to pursue any music knowledge beyond their limited exposure.

It is Urban Aspirations "Young Natives Live Jam Session for Students program objectives to: 1. Expose youth to Jazz.
2. Develop and enhance youth’s ability to perform jazz standards and the art of Jazz improvisation.
3. Provide students with a venue to participate in live jam sessions.

January 21st will be hosted by none other than Chicago's own noted trumpeter, Mr. Corey Wilkes accompanied by the Gallery 37 jazz band.

Urban Aspirations is a community based not-for-profit 501(c) (3) performing arts organization founded in 2001 by Marcus Burks. The mission of Urban Aspirations is to assist in facilitating the aspiration of Chicago’s unknown and young urban performing artists; while at the same time exposing youth to jazz and enhancing their musical skills by using live jam session to develop and enhance youth’s ability to perform jazz standards.

Swedish jazz pianist Stefan Karlsson has traveled the globe as a performer and clinician. Called "remarkable," "superb," and "wonderful" by critics, Karlsson received high accolades for his impressive 2005 recording commemorating the music of Russ Freeman. His extensive repertoire can be heard on more than fifty recordings, and in several movies and TV series. Karlsson is currently a professor in the world-renowned jazz studies department at the University of North Texas, and is pianist for the Eddie Gomez Trio.

Karlsson will give a solo concert on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6:00 pm, and a master class on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 11:00 am.

Tickets for the concert are $25 ($15 students).

Chicago-based singer, composer, arranger, and producer Grazyna Auguscik is one of the most intriguing contemporary vocalists on the world's jazz scene today. Her unorthodox approach to rewriting classic works is at once a tribute to its authors as well as an adventure into uncharted territory, while her own compositions are fresh and original. ARTISTS’ BIOS

Ben Boye is a pianist/composer in Chicago. He has been an active participant in many of Chicago's musical communities since 2003. He collaborates regularly with countless musicians in the city, often in the context of jazz and improvised music. Sometimes he leads a group, sometimes he follows a leader, and sometimes he participates in more egalitarian music-making ensembles. The music he makes with others is consequently diverse. And the sounds any musician makes are, at best, fragments from a soundworld as it is being traversed, however briefly. At worst, in cases of minimal listening, sonic occurrences can become misconstrued as the boundaries of a musician's possible creative output. If we are in search of sonic landscapes which awaken our emotions and/or consciousness -- and if we are in search of insights into a musician's potential and spirit -- the best we can do is listen openly. http://www.myspace.com/bengirle

American pianist Matthew McCright has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe as piano soloist and chamber musician. He has devoted his life to performing works by living composers and has thrilled audiences and critics alike with an imaginative repertoire that spans both the traditional and a wide range of contemporary works. He has premiered numerous new pieces, many written for him, and has collaborated with such composers as Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Michael Gordon, Mary Ellen Childs, Julia Wolfe, Evan Ziporyn, Mark Anthony Turnage, Kirsten Broberg, Laura Caviani, Garrett Sholdice, Alvin Lucier, Linda Buckley and Judith Lang Zaimont among many others.

McCright currently resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is a member of the piano faculty of Carleton College while maintaining an active freelance schedule as one of the Twin Cities most sought after pianists. Upcoming projects include the CD release of Second Childhood on the innova record label and a disc of the piano works of Minnesota composer Gene Gutchë on Centaur Records. He is curator of the Open Doors music series and will launch The Composer’s Project, a nationwide program featuring emerging composers. McCright completed his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Minnesota, holds a Master of Music Degree in Piano from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance, Magna Cum Laude, from Westminster College.

He has been featured in articles in NewMusicBox, Tutti, and American Composers Forum. A member Mu Phi Epsilon, American Music Center, and Chamber Music America, he has performed in collaboration with a variety of ensembles, including dal niente, RenegadeEnsemble, Gypsy Hocket, Zeitgeist, Taipei Trio, Tempus Fugit, New Sound, New Century Piano Duo, Dixie Five, Composer’s Ensemble, Westminster Triptych, WC Jazz Ensemble, and with countless chamber music groups. He maintains a 15+ year performing relationship with soprano Nora Frances Drake. He is pianist-in-residence at Saints Martha and Mary Episcopal Parish and has presented programs in the Music in a Great Space concert series in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the Young Artist Showcase Concerts at Thiel and Westminster Colleges as well as the American Composers Forum and the Schubert Club. The recipient of numerous awards and prizes, McCright’s festival participation includes Bang on a Can at MassMOCA, Printing House Festival of New Music (Dublin), Late Music Festival (UK), Hampden-Sydney Chamber Music Festival, Kodály Institute, Perilous Night, Fringe, Spark Festival of Electronic Music, Seward Arts, Duquesne University’s Summer Music Institute, Music 2000, CCM Village Opening, Minnesota Composers Alliance, and was accepted to the Chautauqua Music Institute.

McCright completed his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Minnesota, under the tutelage of Lydia Artymiw. In addition to private study in New York City with Lisa Moore, he also holds a Master of Music Degree in Piano from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati studying with Richard Morris and earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance, Magna Cum Laude, from Westminster College with Nancy Zipay DeSalvo. ABOUT THE EXPERIMENTAL PIANO SERIES:

The Experimental Piano Series (EPS) showcases performances by innovators in today’s world of experimental piano. These performances include approaches that are influenced and informed by jazz, “new music,” classical music, world music, and other genres. Some of the performances during EPS will involve solo pieces, and others will involve duos and trios. Some of the pieces will be improvised, whereas others will be performances of compositions that are notated.

EPS is organized by the Chicago Composers Forum and the Borderbend Arts Collective. This is the fourth concert in the Experimental Piano Series’ first season; Jim Baker, Justin Dillard, Irina Feoktistova, Paul Giallorenzo, Jon Hey, Ann Ward, and Adam Tendler have performed during EPS so far. The dates for EPS’ second season are Friday, September 11, 2009; November 13, 2009; January 8, 2010; and Friday, March 12, 2010.
