Each season Art Sanctuary brings together the living resources of African American art — the artists who create work that expresses, imagines, envisions and re-envisions life in our contemporary world. The series acts as a community curriculum which is offered for the enrichment of individuals and groups at all levels of education. The program features school matinees, reading projects at various educational sites, artists residencies for teens, collaborative projects, panel discussions, and teachers’ workshops.

A program that brings visual artists to the Rock River Valley, Illinois community to interact with farmers and the land. For Painters/Photographers/Sculptors: The scenic Rock River Valley with its historical sites, sandstone outcroppings, and typical Midwest farms provides endless subject matter for artistic expression. For Earthwork/Field Sculptors: An opportunity to "paint with the land" by cutting/mowing flora on up to 20 acres (primarily designed to be viewed/photographed from the air). Equipment and manpower will be available for pre-designed and approved earthwork sculptures (due with application). Lodging and interaction with local farm families. Entry fee is $200 for 8-day program.

The S.T.A.R. program provides funding for Illinois non-profit organizations to work with professional artists from Illinois to develop and implement residency programs that bring arts activities into their community. This program emphasizes the interaction between professional artists and the public through hands-on participatory experiences. Each residency lasts from 5 to 30 hours.

VisArts is home to many resident artists who are professionals creating in media such as metal, glass, ceramics, photography, painting, graphic design, sculpture, calligraphy and mixed media. Studios are open to the public to watch artists work, and many have their work available for sale. The resident artist community at VisArts is also involved in the teaching of art classes and specialty workshops.
