-Calling All Writers and Travelers Under Age 30-
The Places We've Been, an anthology, is looking for nonfiction narratives that challenge conventional tourism. Stories like--
"Teaching School in Cameroon," a Haitian-American school teacher's
reportage of a day spent dodging machete blades and hiding from the mob
that terrorized his campus after a presidential election.
"Sangre de Cristo," an Irish ethnographer's study of Hispano folklore
while on a New Mexico road trip through the Rio Grande Valley and
Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
"Pushing Everest," an uptown hedge fund analysts' rant about her twenty-five day trek from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp.
The
editors are most interested in narratives that portray how young
travelers engage the global community of an increasingly small world.
Submission is open through December 31, 2008. In addition to
personal experience, the narrative should portray a strong sense of
place. Memoir, literary journalism, reportage, essay, profile,
ethnography, interviews, and graphic illustration are all welcome.
GUIDELINES: Submissions must be typed and sent as a Word document.
Please include your full name, city and state, phone number, email
address, and a biography no longer than two paragraphs. Previously
published work will not be considered. Maximum 5000 words. No
fabricated narratives or pen names.
DEADLINE: December 31, 2008. Please allow six weeks for a response.
Submissions will not be published without the writer's consent.
