Odradek Theatre's upcoming production of Paradise Park, adapted from Chuck Mee's text by Mark Litwicki and Jonathen Wikholm, and directed by Ashley-Marie Quijano, is in need of a creative and hard working sound designer.

The show will run April 13th - May 5th. Rehearsals start Feb 27th, running Mondays through Thursdays. Rehearsals and shows will take place at the Think Tank Theatre, 1770 W. Berteau, Chicago Il., 60613.

The sound designer for Paradise Park will be working with Conor McQueen our composer from San Diego - who may or may not be present for tech and show days. Conor will be composing an entire soundtrack for the show, and more music than will even be needed. The sound designer will need to be in contact with Conor and Ashley-Marie about what is needed for the show, will work to take what has been created for him and fit it to the show, as well as to design other needed sounds.

This is an unpaid position. However, Odradek is still looking for resident designers that we can continue to work with in the future, and begin a creative repertoire with. Community is very important to us, as is working with artists we trust and enjoy.

Project Description

NOW IS THE TIME (NITT) is a shared initiative of the Chicago Public Library (CPL), Steppenwolf Theatre and Facing History and Ourselves (FHAO). Each institution in this three-pronged partnership has a major project taking place in 2012 – 2013 that examines topics such as injustice, violence, tolerance and individual responsibility -- asking Chicago youth to make positive change in their communities NOW by “choosing to participate.” NITT provides a thematic framework for these related initiatives and will be comprised of a set of experiences, activities and a call to action for Chicago’s youth.

Steppenwolf, CPL and FHAO are members of the newly-formed Hive Learning Network. The Hive Learning Network is a community of civic and cultural institutions dedicated to transforming the learning landscape, and creating opportunities for youth to explore their interests in virtual and physical spaces. Through Hive, youth will have multiple, continuous and connected opportunities to explore their intellectual and skill-based interests.

Goals of NITT:

• Engage youth with various passions and skills in authentic “Hanging Out, Messing Around and Geeking Out” (HOMAGO) activities such as digital media creation, critique, performance, book discussions, community conversations and civic engagement around NITT themes such as injustice, hate, violence, tolerance and individual responsibility.

• Create linked opportunities for youth collaboration, expression and discourse around NITT themes.

• Provide youth with pathways to social activism through individual and linked NITT activities.

• Engage youth in multi-dimensional experiences and provide spaces and activities for youth to connect with each other outside of school and their neighborhoods.

• Create new opportunities for partnership between HIVE members.

• Engage teachers by providing them with training, NITT lesson plans and the possibility of in-depth experiences for their students.

Organizational participants and roles:

The Chicago Public Library’s fall 2012 One Book, One Chicago (OBOC) selection is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak —a novel which explores people’s choices and their potential as civic participants. During the months of October- November teens, teachers and adults will engage in book discussions, events and community conversations. Chicago teens will have the opportunity to attend a teen-only program with Markus Zusak, an adaptation of the book at Steppenwolf Theatre, the “Choosing to Participate” Facing History exhibition and mentor-led workshops in YOUmedia designed to support media creation and civic engagement around themes in the book.

Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) brings high-quality theatre to artistically curious young adults across Chicago. SYA will adapt the OBOC selection for the stage. An adaptation workshop for school groups will be offered in fall 2012. In addition, Steppenwolf is working with author Miles Harvey and his undergraduate and graduate students at DePaul University to collect oral histories about youth violence across the city. These oral histories will be made into a theatre piece that will travel to libraries in different communities across the city; each reading will be followed by a community conversation. Teens will participate in these readings and conversations. Other Chicago theatres will participate in NITT by focusing programming from their theatres on issues of tolerance, youth violence and community. Each of these programs can be used as a jumping off point for teen media creation and conversation.

Facing History and Ourselves will host its multimedia exhibit Choosing to Participate in Chicago at the Chicago Public Library’s Harold Washington Library Center August 27–November 11, 2012. The exhibit is part of a national initiative aimed at encouraging young people and adults to think deeply about the importance of participation in a democratic society. The exhibit, its companion website (choosingtoparticipate.org), and related events examine the impact and history of racism and injustice and showcase courageous choices made by communities and individuals to foster compassion and inclusion. The exhibit encourages and empowers adolescents and adults to take its lessons into the community, exposes visitors to compelling models of civic participation, raises awareness of the consequences of individual choices, and enhances awareness of each person's capacity to make a difference.

Facing History will conduct teacher training to connect the OBOC selection and play with the themes of Choosing to Participate. Workshops will take place with Chicago area teachers in summer 2012. The exhibit will also feature “pARTicipation: Young Artists Speak Up” and “Upstanders: Portraits in Courage,” two community-focused companion displays highlighting local individual stories. Work created in YOUmedia-led workshops will also be integrated into these sections of the exhibit.

Areas of Responsibility:

The NITT Project Coordinator will be responsible for:

• Working with the partners on the development of the NITT public identity, including but not limited to managing the creation of the NITT website as well as helping to design and implement other marketing strategies (including design content, assisting in communication to the press, etc.)

• Oversee all digital media for NITT, including creation of a digital identity via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr

• Facilitate and manage linkages and resources between NITT members and community partners

• Help to develop and manage events in conjunction with NITT

• Manage HIVE activities in conjunction with NITT, including outreach to HIVE members and other potential partners and coordinating additional HIVE partner activities as needed

This position fulfills the project’s need for management of internal relationships and communication as well as communication to external audiences.

Compensation

This full-time (40 hours/week) position is funded by a 12 month grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation through the HIVE Learning Network and the Chicago Community Trust from February 2012-February 2013. The position will reside at the Chicago Public Library and report to the leadership team of the NITT partnership, which includes leaders from each of the institutions as outlined above.

This is a part-time seasonal position for the Grant Park Music Festival in Millennium Park. This position reports to the House Manager. Festival Ushers are representatives of the Festival whose primary functions are to assist patrons and to perform other important front of house operational tasks. The Grant Park Music Festival has been a Chicago summertime tradition since 1935. Attended by over 300,000 visitors annually, the Festival presents 10 weeks of classical concerts in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Most concerts take place outdoors in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry and several concerts take place inside the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. The Festival is highly committed to introducing new audiences to classical music and presenting adventurous world-class programming. The Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus are comprised of musicians from other well-regarded orchestras and musical institutions. Carlos Kalmar has been the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Festival since 2001 and the current Chorus Director is Christopher Bell.

Duties:

Welcome and assist patrons at Grant Park Music Festival concerts
Maintain the efficient operation of the Seating Bowl and Membership Seating Areas
Assist patrons in locating assigned seats or assigned seating sections

Duties:

Assist in the areas of marketing, sales, public relations, and advertising
Assist with sales of memberships, group seating, single-night passes, and Festival merchandise
Assist with creating and implementing new sales strategies
Coordinate and maintain the use of the Festival’s merchandise kiosk for all concerts and select open rehearsals
Assist in creation and distribution of season brochures, email newsletters, artists’ biographies, and press releases
Assist with program book and advertising production
Coordinate media relations and maintain the database of press, publicity, and advertising contacts
Coordinate members of the press with requests for information, seating assignments, and photography
Coordinate and attend orchestra and chorus photography and guest artist interviews
Assist with order taking, processing and responding to patrons inquiries about the Festival
Provide general information regarding the Festival to the public during rehearsals and performances
Assist the House Manager with box office and ushering duties for concerts
Perform routine clerical duties: type, file, mail, answer the telephone and write correspondences
Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Application Requirements

Skills & Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Three years or more of college-level education completed and/or two years of professional experience in related field
Excellent communication skills and routinely punctual
Excellent computer skill; proficient in Microsoft Office
Ability to work flexible hours; weekend and holiday availability is required
Close attention to detail, with the ability to work professionally and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
Ability to perform physical labor and lift at least 40lbs
Ability to work outdoors and possibly in inclement weather

Other Desired Qualifications:

Experience in music, tourism and/or special events industries
Knowledge of classical music repertoire
Experience using Tessitura Software and Constant Contact

Assist with the bowing and editing of orchestral parts
Assist with the assembly, distribution and collection of all rehearsal and performance parts and folders
Assist with the cataloguing and filing of music and parts
Assist with the maintenance and updating of the music library database
Assist with the collection, removal of all markings, repair, bundling, and shipping of all rental parts
Perform other duties as assigned

Coordinate and facilitate community engagement activities of the Grant Park Music Festival, working closely with the Teaching Artist
Prepare, organize and facilitate engaging educational and recreational activities for youth day campers visiting the Festival from the Chicago Park District and other outside programs, working closely with the Teaching Artist
Organize transportation, dining and other logistical needs for youth day campers visiting the Festival
Assist with the maintenance and updating of community engagement records and relations

Coordinate operations for the professional and volunteer choral ensembles
Prepare, maintain, distribute and collect music for all chorus rehearsals and performances
Assemble, distribute and collect concert folders, file music, maintain and update chorus databases
Disseminate and collect chorus and orchestra member timesheets, parking cards, etc.
Attend to and aid the Chorus Director and chorus members in the general operations of the chorus
Assist in the coordination of rehearsal and performance logistics
Perform other duties as assigned
