One of the nation's largest facilities devoted to the art of our time, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) offers exhibitions of the most thought-provoking art created since 1945. The MCA documents contemporary visual culture through painting, sculpture, photography, video and film, and performance. Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, the MCA boasts a gift store, bookstore, restaurant, 300-seat theater, and a terraced sculpture garden with a great view of Lake Michigan.

Mission Statement
The mission of the MCA is to be an innovative and compelling center of contemporary art where the public can directly experience the work and ideas of living artists, and understand the historical, social, and cultural context of the art of our time.

ADULT MIME CLASS

Mime is a universal art that crosses language barriers to communicate emotions, ideas, concepts and the abstract through the stylized movements of the body. Students will learn the Basic Techniques of this mesmerizing art form: Corporal Scale, Isolation, Emotions, Objects, Spatial Understanding, Energy Placement and Characterization. Through exercises and applications, they will learn how these fundamental tools of the art form make up the essential base for understanding the foundation of Acting, Clowning, Circus Movement and Stage Magic.

(18+) Tuesdays & Thursdays 4 weeks/twice a week 8:00pm - 9:30pm $170

YOUTH MIME CLASS

T. Daniel and Laurie Willets will teach Youth Mime Students simple yet mesmerizing Basic Mime Techniques, and how to apply them to given concepts as well as to students’ own ideas. From Michael Jackson's "moonwalk” (and how it originated from Mime Basics) to their own original techniques and exercises, this class is intended for beginning-level students interested in Acting, Clowning, Circus or Stage Magic.

Ages 12-17 Thursdays 4 weeks/once a week 4:00pm - 5:00pm $100 March 4th - 25th

MIME CLASS FOR CHILDREN

T. Daniel and Laurie Willets will enable students to experience the Art of Mime through emotions, real and imaginary objects and characterization. Students will tap into their own creativity to communicate in the unspoken, physical language of the imagination: The Art of Mime. No prior experience in the arts necessary for this class. Bring your imagination and a hunger to learn!

How do we measure the health of the cultural sector? Although tools exist to take the pulse of the economy, until now, Americans have not had an index of cultural indicators that tells us about the cultural health of the country. The National Arts Index combines four kinds of measures—

financial (measures of artists’ income; revenues to arts organizations);
capacity (measures of capital assets and employment);
participation (measures of attendance and personal art making); and
competitiveness (the number of degrees granted in the arts; philanthropic support for the arts).

Taken together, these indicators present a comprehensive assessment of the health of the arts in the U.S and, considered over time, the Index gives us a sense of the direction for the arts sector—a kind of cultural “canary-in-the-mine.”

Join us as Randy Cohen presents the National Arts Index. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion about what this means for the arts in Chicago and how we can use this kind of research to strengthen the sector.

She is a member of the Boston Bar Association, the New York Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.

The second annual Chicago International Movies and Music Festival is returning for 2010, hitting screens and rooms all over Chicago from March 4-7.

We are proud to announce that Opening Night, Thursday, March 4th will consist of the US premiere of the international hit film Universalove, presented by director Thomas Woschitz and Naked Lunch, with live accompaniment by the band Naked Lunch, and the Chicago premiere of William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, presented by director Yony Leyser, followed by the first Chicago live appearance of Thee Majesty, featuring Genesis Breyer P-Orridge.

In addition to these special guests, this year we are glad to include director John Edginton who will be introducing the Chicago premiere of his film, Robyn Hitchcock: I Often Dream of Trains, A Concert Film.

As always, music is at the heart of CIMMfest, so we have a number of live performances to go along with the screenings. In addition to Grant Hart, Thee Majesty and Naked Lunch, CIMMfest will host a performance by Robyn Hitchcock in conjunction with the screening of his concert documentary, and by Jon Langford, who is featured in the short film, At Last, Okemah!, which will screen before the show.

To bring an even more international scope to the festival this year, CIMMfest has joined with the Filmer la Musique festival of Paris and is proud to host its representatives as our guests to introduce their films. This year, we also continue the tradition of presenting art as part of the festival as well. In conjunction with the a screening of Eileen Yaghoobian's Died Young Stayed Pretty, CIMMfest will host a rock art show featuring poster art curated by Steve Walters of Screwball Press.

2010‘s festival judges will be Ivan Kral, Marie Losier, Martin Atkins and Grant Hart.

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is a nationally acclaimed visual and performing arts complex in downtown Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Launched in the summer of 2008, Cultural Infrastructure examines the recent building boom in America’s cultural sector. ICE returns to the legendary Velvet Lounge to offer the Chicago premiere of THIRTEEN NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES, an art-pop song cycle by the sensational young composer-performer Corey Dargel. Dargel, who has been called a "baroquely unclassifiable artist" by The New Yorker, takes his inspiration for this genre-defying new chamber piece from a range of psychiatric delusions, with an emphasis on hypochondria.

Vocalist/composer Eva Amaral joined forces with guitarist/composer Juan Aguirre in 1998 to form the pop/rock band, Amaral, and after signing with Virgin Records, they have won an avalanche of awards. Named “Best Spanish Music Group” at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, the critically-acclaimed group has taken Europe, Latin America, and their home country, Spain, by storm. Now, they’re on the verge of something great here in North America. Last fall, their album, La Barrera del Sonido (The Sound Barrier), went gold in the first 15 days of its release, and it also recently won “Best Musical Video Production of 2009” in Spain’s prestigious Premios de la Música. Produced by Cameron Jenkins, their 2008 album, Gato Negro Dragón Rojo (Black Cat, Red Dragon), has gone platinum and reached #1 on the charts in its first week.

The new spring issue featuring covergirl Melissa Auf der Maur’s (former bass player in Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins) comeback, is the perfect fit for Venus Zine’s reemergence, debuting at South by Southwest on March 17 to 20, 2010.

Join the Galaxie for their biggest swing dance of the year: The 3rd annual Battle of the Bands DJ contest! Saturday, March 20 9pm: Beginning Swing lesson (no partner or experience required!) 10pm-1am: Dancing and DJ contest $15 suggested donation All those interested in swing dancing and the music from the swing era are invited, regardless of experience or possession of rhythm and are encouraged to participate in the beginner lesson! Each of some of Chicago’s best swing DJs will represent a jazz artist or ensemble from the swing era of the 1930s and ‘40s in the tunes they play, using their best material to keep the dancers on the floor and themselves in first place. Last year’s event was teeming with energy and excitement as the DJs battled it out, with decked out “ring girls” parading the room, generating wild applause from dancers and onlookers. Dancers of all levels were keeping the 1,960 square foot, high-ceilinged room bouncing all night, cheering on the DJs and taking advantage of the exciting social atmosphere created by the space and community of dancers. Forthe third concert program of its 2009–10 season, the Orion Ensemble performsthe work that inspired its season-long theme of “Musical Connections,” RobertKritz’s “Connections,” written expressly for Orion, along with works byBaermann and Tchaikovsky. Performances are Sunday, March 21 at Fox ValleyPresbyterian Church in Geneva; Sunday, March 28 at the Music Institute ofChicago’s Nichols Hall in Evanston; and Wednesday, March 31 at RooseveltUniversity’s Ganz Hall in Chicago.

Chicago composer Robert Kritz has had a long-term “connection” with theOrion Ensemble and its members. “Connections” for Clarinet, Violin, Viola,Cello and Piano, which he wrote for Orion in 2001, refers to internal andexternal aspects of the work. Internally, a motif connects the three movementsof the piece, like many late 19th century works. Externally, Kritz writes musicthat is virtuosic, jazz-influenced and warmly romantic with a goal of enablingand enhancing human connection—between composer, performers and audience. To him,those human connections are the meaning of music and the essence of life.

An infrequently performed work on the program is the Quartet in B-FlatMajor for Clarinet, Violin, Viola and Cello, Op. 18 by Heinrich Baermann. The19th century “Rubenstein of the clarinet,” Baermann inspired several prominentcomposers with his superb artistry on the instrument, including Mendelssohn,Weber and Meyerbeer, all of whom wrote works for him. Baermann also wrote hisown works—quartets, quintets and concertinos—which show his lively musicalmind, winsome personality and keen awareness of the clarinet’s expressivepossibilities that made him a favorite performer and friend of composers.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovskywrote the Trio in A Minor, Op. 50,for Violin, Cello and Piano as a memorial to his mentor and friend NikolaiRubinstein, premiering it on the first anniversary of Rubinstein’s death in1882. The first movement is in a standard romantic sonata form, and the secondis a large set of variations that starts simply and builds in power and energybefore returning to the first movement theme in funeral march garb. OneTchaikovsky scholar asserts that all the different forms in the variations arerecollections of Rubinstein, which the funeral march finally brings to a close.

This intensive three-day grant proposal workshop is geared for: 1) those who wish to strengthen their grant writing skills and 2) beginners who wish to acquire and master the techniques of preparing, writing and winning proposals from various funding agencies. The center of attention will be on how to effectively tell the story that leads to funding, be it for the researcher in the sciences and social sciences, educator and non-profit professional.

Participants Will Learn How To:
• Comprehend the diversity of the grant funding community
• Research and identify potential funding sources
• Create the right fit with the funding agency
• Address the guidelines of proposals
• Identify and effectively write the key elements of a proposal
• Integrate each component of the grant into the final product
• Develop focused and realistic budgets
• Package professional grants submissions

Space is limited, and since this class fills-up quickly, it is on a first-come-first serve basis.

Workshop fee: $595.00, including tuition, materials, certificate of completion, and continental breakfast. Rebate of $50.00 per person is given for two or more registrants from the same organization.

Lionel Loueke, from Benin, West Africa, returns to the Arts Center’s stage after performing with Esperanza Spalding and Gretchen Parlato in 2008. Loueke is known for his percussive tongue clicking, singing and syncopated guitar playing influenced by his African roots. This time, bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Ferenc Nemeth join Loueke on stage. Tickets for the Family Series are $13 each ($10 for Arts Center members and students through age 21). Performance series tickets are $27 each ($22 for Arts Center members and students through age 21).

Sheri Mason joined Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) as Director of Legal Services in September 2007. Prior to joining the VLA, Sheri worked as a Project Manager at a pharmaceutical training company where she managed the development of training curriculums and materials for pharmaceutical companies.

As Director of Legal Services, Sheri administers the legal referral programs, conducts legal research, and assists clients with their cases. Sheri graduated from Suffolk Law School in 2007 with a Concentration in Intellectual Property, with distinction. She received her B.A., with high distinction, from the University of Rhode Island. She is a member of the Boston Bar Association, the New York Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.

The Illinois CDP is a powerful management tool for arts and cultural organizations. This unique system will, at no cost, allow arts managers and artistic leaders to understand and analyze their organization’s financial performance and situation easily and intuitively. By participating in the Illinois CDP, you will be part of a successful and growing project that will allow researchers and the arts community as a whole to better articulate and provide evidence for the sector’s assets and needs, as well as its contributions to the state and the country. Presented as part of Links Hall's 2009-2010 residency season, Rehearsals for Becoming Gods is an earnest and lumbering, darkly funny and fleetingly magical exploration of the incessant efforts of human beings to manage their bodies – whether toward basic functioning, athletic prowess or otherworldly transcendence. How is a perspective on the body as “other” linked to violence, agency and spiritual devotion? This question frames the activity of dancers Ginger Krebs, Andy Braddock, José Hernandez, Carole McCurdy and Adam Rose as they “attempt flight,” despite restrictions imposed by a series of objects and circumstances.
