Space is divided: East-side, West-side.

East-side - is all common space, kitchen, pantry, 2 full bathrooms, open deck, entertainment area, small stage, gallery, workshop, living room (1,500-2,000 sq ft.)

West-side - is all living quarters (2,000-3,000 sq ft.) six subdivided rooms for privacy considering there are no real walls. All construction is temporary, thus the minimal construction. Which opens up to much innovation and creativity. Living quarters have visual privacy, but only lack in the audible sense. Depending on your lifestyle, certain alterations may need to be taken into account.

We are a 7 operating unit household, meaning that there are 7 total who live here.

3 girls, 4 guys. Professionally, everyone either has a job/studies full-time to make ends meet, along with the intent of utilizing the space for creative purposes. E.G.: (entertainment, construction, dance, living room, party, theater, music performance/ practice, lounge, studies).

These purposes have all been prominent in some way more than others in times past and recent. I'd say we all apply ourselves creatively to one or more outlets, depending on ones own current situation...

We try to keep an open approach to personal accommodation, thus forming a communication that is considerate and reasonable to everyone else. Everyone is expected to contribute at a level that is maintainable for them-self in respect to others. We assign ourselves to chores and monthly meetings to discuss any issues or conflicts that may arise concerning schedule. We are collectively active in that we like to house events every so often, organizing ourselves as a unit.

Expense wise, our situation requires $507 month rent, plus security deposit of $500 to move in. Everyone pays security on behalf of the space, and within a 30 day notice has the right to their deposit when someone is found to replace them. $507 does not include utilities. On average these tend to range from $30-$60 depending on regulated use, including a surcharge of $10-$15 that goes toward the house to help fund communal amenities and such.

Parking isn't really an issue, we are in a non permit/commercial area, but during business hours can be very difficult.

All in all, we all enjoy having our space and sharing it too. There is always much going on: friends, art, music, food, good-time!!

Hi Everyone,

I want to get a discussion rolling about sharing my live/work space with other artists.

WHO AM I?:

A freelance filmmaker (www.standingpoint.org), educator and activist.

HOW MANY ARTISTS AM I SEEKING:

WHY A COMMUNAL WORK SPACE?:

I am a freelance artist and a people person. When I'm working from my computer all day, I find these two descriptors are often contradictory. I'd love to feel social and communal while contining to freelance. I also know that I am more productive with others around working on their own projects.

I was inspired when visiting a filmmaker friend in LA who shares a digital media workspace with 7 other media artists in a garment/textile industrial building in the fashion district. They each pay very little, and are very productive and happy with the situation.

All in all, I am looking to work in the same space as people who prefer the same friendly, creative environment and philosophy.

SPACE:

I included a photo of the main space in this announcement, although there are 4 large tables (not pictured) and many couches to work from. Write me to request more photos of the space (I have many).

The loft is located in Pilsen near Halsted. It's beautiful and large, with tall ceilings, wood floors and many plants.

There is a porch off the back for smoking. And a quiet house dog named Puck.

RENT:

Rent would be $75/month.

This low rate is because I believe in affordable communal work space. I certainly can't afford one of the many expensive studios in Chicago, and I assume you (also a wonderful artist) can't either.

This rent would be given directly to me on the 1st of every month -- no lease signing necessary -- though a gentleman's agreement.

We would have a rotating food schedule to provide the day's snack-attack. Kind of like girl/boy scout snack providing, but in a non-cheesy way. Just keeps it fun and interesting.

Each person would bring a roll of toilet paper per month.

I would provide coffee and tea for breaks.

WORK HOURS:

You can come to use the work space M - F, 9am - 6pm.

We can discuss when you'd like to start using the space. If you'd like, we can start the month of February.

I'd prefer renting out to those who plan on utilizing the space almost everyday, during the daytime (to parallel "office hours" so when it gets dark, we can all drop our work and cleanly cut off the work day) -- This is part of a philosophy I'd like to adhere to, based on a desire to free-up my evenings, a rarity for freelance artists.

With that in-mind, I'm seeking out a small group of artists (of any discipline), commited to communal, daytime and consistent working.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

* Before making a final decision, I'd also like to introduce you to my 2 great roommates at a potluck dinner, to get to know one another, as they'll be around sometimes in the evening.

* Along the way, I may pick up an evening waitress position -- this is potential at this point -- but may have me leaving the space at 4pm some days. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it (meaning, you'll still have access until 6pm daily, no matter what).

* I usually travel for work once every 2 months. This however wouldn't affect your access to the space.

* I know that as a freelance artist you may be gone for periods of time too. I hope you'd understand that rent would remain $75/month.

* Subleasing to a fellow artist for a few months if you are gone extensively is an option we could discuss if you decide to rent here.

We'd lay out a flat cost of $500 a month to use a 1/3 of the time throughout the month to work on your own projects. The studio is accessible 24/7. We are super flexible with scheduling and typically have the schedule set a month in advance. All gear and equipment currently in the space would be available for use. We'd prefer a person who would also have equipment and creativity to contribute. Currently there are two of us that own/run the space and are all about hanging out, bouncing ideas of one another and helping each other with sessions. Great atmosphere!

As far as time commitment, we'd like to have someone spend at least the next 6 months with us. This is a great opportunity for you to get work done out of a great space with a ton of available equipment to use and a flexible schedule.

The Near NorthWest Arts Council manages the Wicker Park Art Center, formerly St Paul's Community Church. The building still hosts Sunday services and weddings, in addition to multi-media festivals, concerts, learning opportunities, theater and a food coop. The sanctuary is original, soaring, wide open space and provides spectacular acoustics for live music. Erica Dicker, violinist and concert master for Anthony Braxton Orchestra books the space because:
I searched high and low for the ideal resonant space to record my solo compositions and improvised pieces for violin. I owe much of the success of my recordings to how wonderfully suited the acoustics in St. Paul's are. Sound carries readily and is big and warm without being boom-y making it a particularly choice setting for string instruments, an ideal venue for both recording or performing acoustic music.
The sanctuary seats 200. The downstairs community room hosts a gallery, and small scale theater space seating 60 people.
