CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Op Shop v.2 – Ad Hoc (Adhocity)

The Opportunity Shop

March 27 – May 1, 2010

Former Hollywood Video Store

1530 East 53rd Street

Chicago, IL

The Opportunity Shop: is a transitory, evolving, and intrinsically experimental art project space, dedicated to the creative facilitation of dialogue and exchange in the Hyde Park community.

The project: “ Op Shop v.2 - Ad Hoc (Adhocity)”:

For the Month of April, the Op Shop will present another wonderland of magical moments, dialogue, and opportunities for the exchange of ideas, things, and histories, inspired by the principles of  “Adhocism”

"Adhocism is the art of living and doing things Ad Hoc -- tackling problems at once, using the materials at hand, rather than waiting for the perfect moment or 'proper' approach....[It] involves a method of creation relying particularly on resources which are already at hand, dealing with an existing situation in a new way...cuts through the usual delays caused by specialization, bureaucracy and hierarchical organization." --Charles Jencks, "Adhocism: A Case for Improvisation."

A Brief History of the Site:

This large one story building, scheduled for tear down in Fall 2010, is made available by The University of Chicago. The space offers a chance to create innovative encounters between artists and audiences, and new ways of connecting art to urban change. This particular space was built in the mid-fifties during the time of urban renewal. Over the years it has changed hands from Walgreen's drugstore to the Hyde Park Federal Savings and Loan to Kroch's and Brentano's bookstore and then finally to Hollywood video store.

Project Proposal: The Op Shop is looking for projects that reflect and concern themselves with issues brought up by this particular space, its relationship to the community, and its impending demolition this autumn. In the broader sense, project ideas could reflect collective memory, abandoned spaces, "failed/expired" ideas, obsolescence, the need for improvisation, and ad hoc ideas for a better future. New on-site work is preferred, but existing projects will also be considered if thematically relevant.  All media and all disciplines are welcome.

Proposal Requirements

1. Contact information: Name, email address, and telephone number

2. Artist Statement and Biography

3. Brief summary describing the proposed project including media, approximate dimensions, and duration if time based (film, video, sound , performance.) Sketches or appropriate images should be included.
