ChicagoUrban Window Space Exhibitions is looking for artists who are interested in creating site-specific art installations in empty storefronts and window spaces in the city of Chicago. The theme for these exhibitions is IDENTITY: real or invented. Proposed artwork should explore the theme including, but not limited to, issues of personal identity, invented identity (persons, worlds, or nature), personal mythologies, ways of presenting or communicating identity, how outsiders view identities, physical or online representations of identity, etc.
Art in all mediums will be considered. Proposed art should respond to the site and be flexible to the space requirements. Proposals and artwork should take into account the site-specific and temporary nature of the project and not be just a space where an artist wishes to hang artwork already created that does not respond to the space. All artwork will be viewed from the sidewalk—the spaces will not be enterable by viewers. Artwork must be suitable for all audiences, and content should be sensitive to being situated in a public space. New artwork designed specifically for the space, or existing artwork that is repurposed for this specific exhibition, are encouraged.
Interested artists or groups of artists are invited to submit proposals. Art proposals should include:
Artist(s) name, address, phone, email, website, and any other applicable contact information.
Description of proposed work, including drawings and appropriate written descriptions. Please indicate how artwork will be installed in the space (i.e. on a wall, on the floor, suspended from the ceiling, on a table/pedestal/shelf, attached to the window, projected, etc.). Artists will be expected to provide most if not all of artwork and hanging/display materials.
Any technical or specific requirements needed for the proposed artwork that cannot be provided by you the artist, including (but not limited to): pedestals/tables, moveable or permanent walls, electricity outlets (and how many), special lighting requirements, etc.
5-10 images of proposed work, or examples of past work. Please indicate which images are past or proposed work. Please send low-resolution images at a minimum of 72 dpi at 4”x6” and a maximum of 150 dpi at 8”x10”, or a website. Name images according to their number and name on the image description list. If sending a website, please indicate the exact pieces you wish to be viewed and their urls.
Image description list. Please include titles, dimensions, medium(s), year, and any other useful information regarding the piece(s).
Artist statement and brief biography regarding your art practice and how the proposed work fits into the theme.
The HELLO my name is… exhibition will span multiple exhibition spaces in the West to Northwest of Chicago. Exhibition dates and opening reception are TBD, for approximately one month duration in May-June 2010. Artists may be expected to install, upkeep, and de-install their own artwork.
All proposals should be emailed. Please put “Window Submission_Your Name” in the subject line on all proposals and correspondence regarding your submission. Please direct questions and proposals to Jennifer at hello.my.name.is.windows@gmail.com.
DEADLINE: March 21st, 2010, midnight CST
Incomplete or late submissions will not be reviewed.
