"Bearing Witness: Art as Social Action..."
...How and why do artists act as social witnesses? This juried exhibition seeks artwork made in response to witness--artwork that expresses social issues that may be inspired by personal, interpersonal or societal events. Beyond containing the experiences and providing a vehicle for investigation, these pieces shine light on events, making them available to others.
Juried by Barbara Fish, artist, art therapist, and psychologist who is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Graduate Art Therapy Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Dr. Fish's work focuses on response art and the artist's ability to use images to contain, explore, or express what they have witnessed. Her own images lead the way in her investigation of the concept of harm's touch, which she defines as how we are affected by what we witness. She presents this work nationally, and is in the process of writing about it for publication.
