Executive Director (part-time)

Part Time: 4 – 8 hours/week, 20 hours a month guaranteed

$15/hour (W9)


Homeroom designs artistic projects and programs with two core values: conversation and collaboration. We present music, visual art, video, literature, and public discussions. Homeroom doesn’t have its own venue, but instead partners with venues and organizations around Chicago.


Homeroom is seeking an Executive Director to not only continue the organization’s five current series, but also lead the organization through programmatic and financial growth. The position requires initiative, skill in organizing and coordinating, and a passion for art, culture, and new ideas.


Much of the work will be done remotely, but the ED can expect frequent in person meetings around Chicago.  


Job Description

Coordinate all operational and governance functions of the organization including:

  • Board of Directors
    • Recruit and support the board of directors
    • Collaborate with Board Chair to set agendas and lead all meetings
  • Develop annual budgets and fundraising plans – annual budget: ~$15,000+
    • Propose budget to the Board for edits and approval
    • Ensure the budget is followed and resources are properly stewarded
    • Oversee all financial matters, including ensuring that organization remains liquid and can meet its financial obligations
    • Work with Board and staff to author and execute strategic plans
  • Develop and support programming
    • Work with Programming Officer to create robust, mission-aligned programming
    • Recruit programmers and curators
    • Support programs with budgetary resources and expertise
    • Serve as lead programmer for performances and events when appropriate
    • Work with Manager of External Relations to market events and organization
    • Serve as a liaison between Board and programming staff
  • Lead fundraising activities
    • Cultivate and steward donors through annual Board of Directors give/get campaign, direct mail, and digital campaigns
    • Work with Board to plan, organize, and execute fundraising events
    • Work with Manager of External Relations to write and research grant opportunities for the organization
    • Provide quarterly giving reports to the Board
  • Oversee operations
    • Oversee accounting and book keeping of the organization and share reports with Board
    • Ensure digital tools (website, email, social media) are running and operating
    • Secure insurance for the organization
  • Supervise all paid and unpaid staff (seven people), curators, artists and volunteers
    • Hire and on-board staff and volunteers
    • Work to address staff and volunteer interests and needs
Skills & Qualifications: 


  • Experience with Chicago art and music, either as an arts administrator, promotor or artist with organizational experience.
  • Understanding of basic fundraising principles
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Design experience preferred
