EPIC (Empathic Playwriting Intensive Course)



The following is a high-level overview of duties associated with the position of EPIC Education Coordinator:

Program Staff:

  • Identify and manage qualified teaching artists; evaluate their skill sets; retain teaching artists as needed; facilitate a training program for new teaching artists.

  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of staff including site visits with written reports.

  • Schedule meetings/e-communication/phone calls with program staff on a regular basis.

  • Serve as troubleshooting support for staff regarding classroom problems or opportunities.

  • Help coordinate between Silk Road Rising’s Production Manager and the EPIC staff to plan and schedule the culminating event: staged readings of select plays by professional actors.


  • Manage donor expectations.

  • Conduct presentations for donors.

  • Work with development staff to accurately reflect EPIC program requirements.

  • Work with development staff on final grant reports.

  • Help coordinate funder site visits to EPIC residencies and serve as a resource for funders when attending site visits.

Participating Schools:

  • Identify qualified schools for EPIC residencies.

  • Contact teachers and administrators from deserving schools via email, phone, and in-person meetings to develop and maintain partnerships.

  • Develop contracts for schools; implement contracts at schools; make sure schools participate as defined in the contract.

  • Schedule regular meetings and check-ins with participating schools to enhance the business relationship.

  • Solicit funding from participating schools to partially support EPIC classroom residencies.

Quality Control:

  • Ensure spirit of EPIC is not compromised in delivery of the program.

  • Educate self and develop ideas to strengthen the education program.

  • Attend training programs as determined by Executive Director.

Measurements & Outcomes:

  • Develop program outcomes & measurements; make sure the program implementation adheres to program goals.

  • Attend class and final performances to gauge curriculum effectiveness independent of the teaching artist’s teaching skill level or style.

  • Implement measurement rubrics in classrooms

  • Collect and analyze student play rubrics as graded by teaching artists to evaluate accuracy and efficacy.

  • Review teaching artist final reports and tweak EPIC based on the effectiveness of the program as experienced by the teaching artist.

  • Conduct kick-off and post-mortem events with teaching artists as a way of reflecting upon successes and areas of improvement for program and collectively targeting goals for future residencies.

Working with Executive Director:

  • Work with Executive Director to strengthen the program from a funding and education perspective.

  • Work with Executive Director to determine program budget; adhere to program budget.

  • Develop regular program reports for Executive Director.

Community Outreach:

  • Participate in community initiatives to keep EPIC front and center for the community.

  • Attend fairs/events to promote EPIC.

  • Work with the education community to develop relationships outside of Silk Road Rising.

  • Attend donor-developed and other educational programs.


  • Access to a car.

Skills & Qualifications: 

Ideal candidate has a degree in education and two plus years experience leading an arts learning program.
