Dynamic, Professional Non-Profit Seeks Program Instructor for Spoken Word Program for Teen Girls Step Up Women’s Network is a national non-profit membership organization dedicated to connecting and advancing women and girls. Our teen empowerment programs help create confident, college-bound and career-ready young women.    Position SummaryUnder the Program Manager’s supervision, the Spoken Word Instructor will manage the overall operations of the Step Up “Inspired Voices” Spoken Word Program, a program serving up to 20 high school age girls at two Step Up sites listed below.  The instructor is also required to assist on additional programming opportunities for special events, based upon Step Up curriculum, policies, and vision. Duties and responsibilities include:
:
  • Create detailed timeline and plan for preparing and executing final performance project.
  • In collaboration with Program Manager, create weekly class curriculums with clear objectives that build upon each other to culminate in final performance project.
  • Coordinate and supervise each weekly class, including oversight of activities of teen participants.
  • Instruct participants about spoken word/poetry/performances topics.
  • Delegate projects and tasks to volunteers as needed while guiding and directing their progress.
  • Complete weekly reports for the Program Manager
  • Help direct and led special events and programs.
  • Write a program narrative report at the conclusion of the program.

Tuedays, 3:00pm-4:30pm 

 

Muchin College Prep, 1 N. State Street

Wednesdays, 3:45pm-5:15pm 

Fill Date and Compensation

Immediate. This is a project-based contract position of approx. 7 hours per week through June 1, 2010.  The pay is hourly at $12-15 per hour, commensurate with experience.

 
Qualifications and Application Requirements

Skills & Qualifications: 

QualificationsIdeal candidates will have at least two years experience working with youth in ethnically diverse and underserved communities, and an educational or professional background in the area of creative writing or a related field.  Candidates should meet the following additional criteria:
  • Undergraduate degree or other study in creative writing, theater/performance or related subjects.
  • Passion for women’s social issues and interest in providing quality educational, enriching experiences to girls.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Teaching or public speaking experience/training is preferred.
  • Ability to work life skills, community building, relationship skills, self-esteem and life lessons into weekly programs.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to deliver consistent quality, professional work.
  • Self-starter and fast-learner who does not require heavy supervision.
  • Flexible and copes well with change.
  • Ability to travel to multiple sites throughout the greater Chicago area.
  • Some interest in fundraising or non-profit management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is strongly preferred.
