IMAN seeks talented multidisciplinary artists to serve as instructors and mentors to Chicago youth for 10 hours a week (days are flexible). The 'Leaders of the New School' arts apprenticeship program will begin the last week of June 2008 and positions will last for a six-month period (with an opportunity to extend). Each artist will be grouped with five youth and responsible for training them in a specific art form, serving them as a mentor, and incorporating their group's work into a larger collaboration.

The Leaders of the New School is a program that challenges youth ages 15 and up to push their artistic boundaries and engage in an intensive training of individual and collaborative art production with a purpose of empowering themselves as well as their communities.  Throughout the program, youth will be exposed to new ideas and processes while building on their current artistic skills and responding to community issues and needs. By fall of 2008, youth will have created a multi-disciplinary production that will debut in Chicago and travel to other Midwest cities.

 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Develop arts curriculum for the artists area of specialty
  • Instruct a group of five youth in a specific art form/forms
  • Facilitate discussion with small groups of youth
  • Serve as mentors for the youth participants
  • Attend weekly meetings with all artists
  • Assist in facilitating instruction, activity, and discussion sessions for the larger group (20 youth)
Qualifications and Application Requirements

Skills & Qualifications: 

Qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more areas of: music performance, music production, visual art, theatre, movement, dance, poetry, and/or the elements of Hip Hop culture (MCing, DJing, Breaking, and Graffiti Art).
  • Familiarity with the history of the arts in social justice movements
  • Willingness to work with other artists as well as independently
  • A history and familiarity of working with youth

Hourly Salary to be determined based on relevant experience
