Learn how to hone your storytelling chops. Learn how to amp up both the writerly quality of your work, and the mesmerizingness of your performance. Gain confidence, gain poise, gain, I don't know, dynamism? Savoir faire? Might and moxie?
Storytelling has exploded over the past several years - join Ian Belknap, one of its leading artists (founder of WRITE CLUB, one of the city's most highly regarded shows, veteran of dozens of other live lit/storytelling shows, including You're Being Ridiculous, Essay Fiesta, Guts & Glory, Funny Ha Ha, and many, many others). More importantly for you, however, Ian is an experienced instructor who's taught at Second City Training Center, StoryStudio Chicago, and Northwestern University's Summer Writers Program - he's a sharp-eared listener who's great at assessing your goals in a piece, and helping you narrow the gap between where it is and where you wish to take it.
Performing stories from your own experience may SEEM like some elusive talent you're either born with or not, but it's actually a SKILL that you can learn/build on/improve. If live lit is a form that's of interest to you - whether you've performed before or not - then this is the workshop for you. You'll emerge a much stronger, much more compelling performer, and a clearer, more forceful writer.
You'll get weekly assignments, read new pieces every class, and receive detailed feedback each time - from your colleagues and from your instructor.
