Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women, and their children living in Kenya. Our shelter, education, and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, refugee girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.
Heshima Kenya will celebrate its 10 years of impact in the lives of refugee girls and young women with their signature fundraising gala, the 6th annual Fashion Challenge on Thursday, April 12 at the Chicago Cultural Center. This Project Runway inspired fashion show highlights their social enterprise, the Maisha Collective, a program that fosters leadership and business skills through the design and production of hand-dyed fabrics and scarves.
We are honored to have Chicago Fashion Icon, Nena Ivon, as this year's Fashion Director and Jamie Hayes, owner and designer of Production Mode, an ethically made clothing line, as Lead Judge. Ivon was Saks Fifth Avenue's longest tenured employee, working there for over 53 years. Hayes holds degrees in both Fashion Design and Social Work and is passionate about the intersection of fashion and human rights.
