CHICAGO, IL -   BrooksDay@Nite: Praise & Jubilation is Gwendolyn Brooks’ 100th birthday celebration AND THE ONLY CELEBRATION ON HER BIRTHDAY. This gala celebration will include 100 one-minute performances, reception, birthday cake, Brooks books tables, and more.

 

Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E 60th Street Chicago, IL 60637, doors open at 5:30 PM for hors d'oeuvres before the 6:00 PM performance. BrooksDay@Nite is a one-of-a-kind evening celebration of curated performances by some of Chicago’s greatest artists, and will include poetry readings, remembrances of Brooks, live music, original dance, digital media, and live visual art brought to you by the BrooksDay Steering Committee, the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, and other city-wide BrooksDay partners.  

 

BrooksDay@Nite is the fifth annual BrooksDay birthday celebration of the acclaimed Gwendolyn Brooks who was known for her many literary and community accomplishments including:

 

  • America's’ first Black Pulitzer Prize recipient in 1950

  • the United States’ Poetry Consultant for the Library of Congress from 1985 to 1986 a position now known as Poet Laureate

  • the Poet Laureate of Illinois from 1968 to 2000

  • inspiration and, instigator for countless scholars and wordsmiths who became our next generation’s poets, teachers, librarians, and change makers

  • a mother, mentor, poet, teacher and listener who would have turned 100 years old this June 7th!

ABOUT BROOKS PERMISSIONS

Managing the literary works of acclaimed writer, Gwendolyn Brooks, while demonstrating the continued relevance of her work in the 21st century and beyond.  Founded in 2001, was initially created as the official licensing firm for the literary works of Gwendolyn Brooks after her passing in 2000.  Offering products and programming, which will shed more light on the life and works of Ms. Brooks.  Brooks Permissions processes numerous requests for Ms. Brooks’ works annually, working with mainstream, educational, and independent publishers, as well as individual artists for projects ranging from literary anthologies and academic course packs to theatrical performances, multimedia projects and more.
