Justin Cooper: Thread

Thread offers Justin Cooper's first large-scale sculpture/installation, the exhibition is bookended with two performances featuring Cooper with Noelle Mason and Ross Moreno. The installation and performances will interact together intimately, like lovers, as well as ignore each other completely, like lovers. Meanwhile, several dichotomies will be pressed into service: temporality vs. permanence; abstraction vs. personification; audience vs. performer; speech vs. gesture; observed impossibility vs. unseen possibility; low profile vs. high body mass; hard factual accounting vs. ethereal hazy accounting; retention vs. loss; celestial chimes vs. terrestrial drums; object vs. space; cold equations vs. heartwarming pseudoscience; eye-witness account vs. eye-witness account; acting vs. re-acting; realistic expectation vs. idealistic projection; unexplained giant fur-covered paper bag vs. explained giant fur-covered paper bag etc... more...

Open Studio under the Cultural Center -- Mike Genovese

Open Studio: Mike Genovese
Artist Michael Genovese will transplant his studio in the pedway of the
Chicago Cultural Center (May 1st -June 30th, 2008) as a second phase of his on-site interactive project realized at the Museum of
Contemporary Art Chicago earlier this year. Chicagoans in transit are invited into an artists' studio that welcomes interaction, collaboration, and contemplation. The general public is encouraged to partake in the process by carving their hopes and aspirations, complaints, or confessions onto designated plates of aluminum. The project intends to record a range of perspectives and culture native to Chicago through an art making practice. The collection of work will be exhibited in art galleries and institutions in various regions of the country, showing the unique and dynamic personality of Chicagoans and it's visitors. more...

Intro Series in Skinner Releasing Technique

Julie Mayo/Dim Sum Dance
Intro Series in Skinner Releasing Technique
Mondays, May 5-26, 6:30-8:30pm
$48 for the series, $15 drop-in

Skinner Releasing Technique™ is a pioneering approach to dancing that has evolved from the simple principle that when we are releasing tension and habitual holding patterns we can move more freely, powerfully, and articulately. Through guided imagery, music, and hands-on partner studies, the practice facilitates a deep kinesthetic experience of movement, and allows the individual to proceed at their own pace. Open to all.

Julie Mayo is Artistic Director of contemporary dance company Dim Sum Dance and a certified teacher of Skinner Releasing Technique™. www.dimsumdance.org
