Improv Playhouse Theatre for Young Audiences is seeking actors for a touring production of The Ugly Duckling.In this new musical adaptation, we follow a young duckling born in the Lincoln Park Zoo and their journey to find where they belong. Along the way we meet quirky zoo animals of all types and learn valuable lessons about confidence and respect.

Improv Playhouse Theatre for Young Audiences is committed to engaging students and enhancing communities through the performing arts. We strive to highlight the importance of imaginative thinking, giving children the opportunity to solve problems on their own volition. Our entertaining and educational shows bring well-known stories to life to teach children valuable life lessons.

AUDITION DATE: Sunday January 21st and Monday January 22nd.


AUDITION TIME: 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

If you are unable to attend a slot within these times, please let us know and we will try to accommodate you to the best of our abilities.


AUDITION LOCATION: Auditions will be held in Improv Playhouse’s rehearsal space in the basement of The Highland Park Community House at 1991 Sheridan Rd, Highland Park, IL 60035.

The Highland Park Community House is accessible via the UP-N Metra line. It is a short 10-minute walk from the station in the heart of downtown Highland Park. It is also easily accessible via the Edens Expressway.




PAY: Performers are paid per performance.


TYPE/RESTRICTIONS: We are seeking to fill the cast with four talented, comedic, and musical actors of any race or gender background, ages 20s-40s.

Portable instrument experience is a plus, particularly guitar, ukulele, general string instruments, harmonica, etc...

Access to a vehicle is a plus, but by no means a requirement. Experience performing for and interacting with young people a plus.


TIME COMMITMENT: The rehearsal schedule will be determined based on cast availability, however rehearsals will likely take place three to four times a week between the hours of 10:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. during the month of February.

Upon completion of the rehearsal period the show will tour the greater Chicagoland Area to libraries, schools, and daycare centers. Generally speaking, the touring cast meets at a central location and carpools to the venue.

The show begins performances in early March and will continue running through mid-August. The performance schedule is constantly being filled as inquiries and bookings fill up. Our most common performance time is in the morning at 10:00 A.M. Monday-Saturday.


MATERIALS TO PREPARE: 1) Please prepare a 1-2 minute comedic monologue.

2) A 1-2 minute vocal audition. No accompanist will be provided. You may accompany yourself on any instrument (piano provided), provide your own accompanist, or sing acapella.

3) If you play an instrument that you think would be effective to bringing on tour, please prepare a short piece showcasing that ability as well.

4) Any additional special skill that you may like to share with us such as a short magic trick, accents/impressions, gymnastics, etc...
