Copyright for Music Artists and Entrepreneurs

On Thursday, October 26, from 6 PM - 7:30 PM at the Pilsen Law Center

Participants will learn from real life legal battles over ownership of the copyrights of music, with music samples, the facts and the legal lessons behind those clashes. Participants will also learn about the different types of authorship (sole, joint, work for hire) and a variety of legal implications within each category especially co-writership. Other topics include earning royalties from: digital streaming, digital downloads; earning royalties as a producer; sampling (using other people’s music in general), derivative works, fair use and the fifth factor: Transformative Use/Parody as learned through case law; how the public domain works, enterprising your work (including corporate structuring for the self-starter), the life of a copyright; and other legal issues around music copyright.

This will be accomplished through a presentation of relevant case law for music and copyright basics (40%), music listening and analysis with the audience (40%) and copyright and business structure formalities (20%).
