Artists' Talk: Figura

January 5, 2017 | 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Join us for an artists' talk moderated by Skyart.

This exhibit connects four prolific artists who have parallels and fascination with art making, materials, and a strong focus on “the figure.” FIGURA is a body of work created in various mediums such as acrylic on birch, bristol, silkscreen prints, and even mixed media on found objects. The artwork on display has an association with pop surrealism, figurative art, illustration, street art, and portraiture.

The artists use street art aliases NACO, JASSO, FEDZ, The CHUP. These artists have experience in making street art, murals, workshops, teaching, sculpting, printing, designing, and facilitating pop up art exhibits. While working amidst the south side areas of Chicagoland, strong working relationships have been built in the arts in Little Village, Pilsen, Midway, Cicero, Blue Island, and South Chicago. Identity and pride are a huge source of inspiration for these artists.lo-fi techniques such as clay and hi-fi techniques including 3D printing. The resulting work will contribute to a collaborative public sculpture. Justus Harris, our Maker in Residence, takes health data and public information and transforms them into meaningful patterns over time using 3D design. Free and open to the public.

Our Anniversary: A Celebration

January 6, 2017 | 7:00pm to 10:00pm

To celebrate a year of being active we're hosting #AnotherSocial this time we're featuring the works of 'Araba Ankuma' she will be showing her never before seen work 'Chi-Boys'

About Araba & 'Chi-Boys'

“There are those who are there for themselves. And those who are here for everyone else. I want to be the latter.”

Araba Ankuma is a documentary and editorial photographer based in Philadelphia, PA. Her work touches on themes of Invisibility and Hypervisibility within a world that so desperately lacks human empathy. By approaching social issues through her visual scope, she aims to illuminate the invisible narratives of the people who exist both underneath and on the periphery of our world’s societies.

“Chi Boys” is the culmination of research conducted throughout the summer of 2016, to bring to light a side of the black male that has been so heavily neglected. What motivates the African-American man to contribute each day to a society that gives so little back? That instead abuses and discards him. Over the course of the summer and throughout various parts of the city, she asked each participant the question. “what is your biggest fear?” in the hopes that by knowing what man is running from, we may better understand what they are running towards.

Writer's Studio Write-In

January 7, 2017 | 10:00am to 4:00pm

Join us for a day of writing, community, and inspiration at our FREE Writer’s Studio Write-In. We know that too much solitude can be a downfall for writers, so we will create a space for both creative work and community. Most of the time will be devoted to working individually, but we are building in a few moments to foster discussion and inspiration, too.

We’ll start at 10 AM with the Meet and Greet over coffee and tea. Next, we’ll devote two hours or more to working individually. Around 12:30 PM, we’ll break for an hour-long Lunch and Read, where everyone will have a chance to share a page or more of their work (if they’d like) and we can discuss process, creative problem solving, and anything else that serves the group. From roughly 1:30-4 PM, we’ll get back to writing.

Come for the whole day or whatever portion works for you. Use this time to devote yourself to your creative pursuits alongside other writers. This event is a collaboration with the Writer’s Studio Student Board, and we promise to have a few surprises along the way.

To attend, you must register ahead of time using the below link. Lunch will be provided. We hope to see you there!
